Aircraft fly low over Maho Beach because the Runway 10 threshold at Princess Juliana International Airport sits immediately beyond the beach and a road. Arrivals following the normal roughly three-degree glidepath must cross the shoreline at low altitude; they are not descending specially for spectators.

In real-world aviation, this is a normal consequence of runway alignment, airport geography and wind, not a display pass. Princess Juliana International is identified as SXM by airlines and TNCM in ICAO flight planning.

Why does the Runway 10 approach cross Maho Beach?

Runway 10 points roughly east, and its approach end is on the airport's western edge beside Maho Beach. An aircraft approaching from the west crosses the sea, beach, public road and airport boundary before reaching the runway threshold.

Easterly trade winds often favour landing towards the east because aircraft normally take off and land into wind when practical. Wind is not the only factor: air traffic control, runway conditions, traffic and aircraft performance can change the runway in use. When arrivals use Runway 28 in the opposite direction, they do not make the familiar low approach over Maho Beach.

How low are aircraft over Maho Beach?

Aircraft are generally only tens of metres above the beach, but there is no single height applying to every flight or every viewing position. A typical three-degree approach is arranged to cross the runway threshold at about 50 feet, or 15 metres, although the exact approach reference and wheel clearance vary with the procedure and aircraft geometry.

The shoreline is before the threshold, so an aircraft is somewhat higher over the beach than it will be at the runway end. On a three-degree path, height changes by about 5.2 metres for every 100 metres of horizontal distance. Large jets still appear extremely close because spectators are almost underneath them, with few familiar objects available for judging scale.

Do pilots descend early to use more of the runway?

No; pilots do not deliberately flatten the approach or aim for the threshold to gain extra landing distance. They fly the published or assigned approach, maintain a stabilised speed and descent path, cross the threshold at the required height and aim for the normal touchdown zone.

Runway length does affect allowable landing weight, braking calculations and which aircraft can operate safely. It does not justify an unusually low approach. If the aircraft is too low, too fast or otherwise unstable, the correct response is a go-around rather than trying to salvage the landing.

Is watching aircraft at Maho Beach safe?

The aircraft operation is normal and controlled, but a spectator's position on or beside the beach can still be hazardous. Arrivals bring intense noise, wake turbulence and blown sand or loose objects; general low-flying restrictions also do not apply in the same way when an aircraft is necessarily taking off or landing.

The greater ground-level danger is often jet blast from departing aircraft. An aircraft entering or using Runway 10 may apply substantial thrust with its exhaust directed towards the airport fence, road and beach. Spectators should obey local signs and barriers, keep away from the fence and extended centreline, and never position themselves directly behind an aircraft's engines.

Can you recreate the Maho Beach approach in a flight simulator?

Yes, but it should be flown as a standard Runway 10 arrival rather than an intentionally low pass. Intercept the centreline from the west, establish a stable descent near three degrees, use the available visual slope guidance and aim for the touchdown zone rather than the runway edge.
