Fix an aircraft that keeps rolling right in MSFS 2020 by checking joystick drift, duplicate bindings, trim, wind, autopilot and fuel balance.
A constant right roll in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 is usually caused by a mis-centred roll axis, duplicate controller binding, or unwanted aileron trim. Wind, fuel imbalance, rudder input, autopilot modes and aircraft add-ons can also cause it. Test in calm weather with one controller connected to isolate the fault.
How do I stop the aircraft rolling right?
The fastest method is to remove weather, automation and extra hardware from the test, then add them back one at a time.
- Establish a clean test: load a default, unmodified aircraft with balanced fuel and payload, failures disabled and calm weather. Test in stable cruise at a safe altitude rather than during take-off, where power changes and gusts can confuse the diagnosis.
- Disconnect automation: turn off the autopilot, AI piloting and control assistance. Centre any aileron and rudder trim using the cockpit indications or assigned controls; resetting elevator trim alone will not fix a lateral imbalance.
- Isolate the hardware: disconnect or disable every controller except the one being tested. Include gamepads, pedals, throttle quadrants and unused joysticks—a second device can send a hidden axis command while sitting untouched.
- Watch the controls: with your hands off, inspect the cockpit yoke or stick and the external ailerons. Check the rudder too, because continuous yaw can develop into roll through dihedral or swept-wing coupling.
- Audit every assignment: open Controls Options for each connected device and search for
aileron,rudderandtrim. Normally, only one physical axis should control each primary flight axis. Remove accidental digital left/right commands and duplicate assignments. Add only enough dead zone to stop centre noise; excessive dead zone makes precise flying harder. These practical sensitivity and dead-zone starting points help after calibration.
- Compare another stock aircraft: the same roll in several aircraft points to controls or assistance settings. A problem confined to one aircraft points instead to its fuel state, systems, flight model or an add-on conflict.
What does the right-roll pattern tell you?
When and where the roll appears usually separates a controller fault from normal aircraft behaviour.

Is a slight right roll normal in MSFS 2020?
A slight tendency can be normal, but a sustained bank requiring constant opposite aileron deserves investigation. An aircraft will not necessarily remain perfectly wings-level hands-off, especially while accelerating, changing power or flying through turbulence.
A steady crosswind aloft does not by itself hold one wing down because the aircraft moves within the air mass. Gusts, wind gradients and crosswind effects close to the ground can produce rolling and yawing disturbances.
Do not automatically blame propeller torque for a right roll. In many conventional single-engine propeller aircraft, torque tends to roll the aircraft left at high power, although propeller direction and aircraft design vary. If a common trainer consistently rolls right in calm, stabilised flight, inspect the controls first.
Can aileron or rudder trim cause a constant roll?
Yes. Aileron trim directly changes lateral balance, while rudder trim can yaw the aircraft and indirectly produce a bank.
Many light aircraft do not have pilot-adjustable aileron trim in the cockpit. If one shows a strong lateral trim effect, inspect controller assignments, add-on scripts and assistance settings rather than simply trimming against it. Why does it roll right only with the autopilot on?
If the aircraft rolls only with the autopilot engaged, the autopilot is probably commanding a turn rather than exposing a basic flight-control fault. Check the active lateral mode and the selected heading, navigation course or flight-plan intercept.
Disconnect the autopilot and stabilise the aircraft manually before changing anything. Do not hold opposite aileron or apply trim against an engaged autopilot; an off-centre controller axis can fight the servos, cause oscillation or disconnect the autopilot, depending on the aircraft.
When is the aircraft or add-on causing the roll?
The aircraft or add-on is the likely source when every other stock aircraft flies normally with the same controller profile. Reset left and right fuel quantities, centre the payload, close the spoilers, compare engine output and disable failures for the test.
For stock MSFS 2020 aircraft, use the Modern flight model unless a particular add-on explicitly requires something else. If the fault began after installing a modification, temporarily remove aircraft-related packages from the Community folder and restart the simulator before retesting.
Avoid masking a controller fault with permanent aileron trim. Correct the unwanted input first, then use trim only for the small aerodynamic imbalance that remains in stable flight.
