An aircraft livery in flight simulation is the visual paint scheme applied to a particular aircraft model. It changes colours, airline branding, registration, logos and sometimes surface finish, but a normal livery does not change the engines, flight model, cockpit systems or handling. Downloadable simulator liveries are also called repaints.

This is a General flight-simulation term shared by Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS), X-Plane, FSX, Prepar3D, RealFlight and many airline simulators, although each platform uses its own file structure and terminology. The meaning comes from real aviation, where an operator's livery identifies its aircraft visually.

Plane livery meaning: what does it change?

A plane livery changes the textures and material maps drawn over an aircraft's three-dimensional model.

  • Fuselage, wings, tail, engine nacelle and propeller colours
  • Airline names, logos, fleet markings and alliance branding
  • Military insignia, squadron codes and historic schemes
  • Registration numbers, aircraft names and national flags
  • Weathering, dirt, gloss, metallic appearance and surface roughness
  • Sometimes cabin, cockpit, crew or equipment textures

Modern aircraft can use several texture maps for the same surface. A colour map supplies the artwork, while roughness, metallic and normal maps may control reflections or simulate shallow details such as seams and rivets. These effects do not alter the model's outline or collision geometry.

Registrations need special attention. Some are permanently painted into the livery, while others are generated dynamically from the simulator's aircraft settings. Changing the callsign or registration field will not replace a painted number unless that aircraft supports dynamic registration text.

When a download is labelled as a “livery plane” or “livery aircraft”, check its requirements rather than assuming it includes the aircraft. In most download libraries, that wording still means a repaint for a separate base model.

Is an aircraft livery the same as a repaint or complete aircraft?

Livery and repaint normally mean the same finished visual modification; neither is usually a complete flyable aircraft.

A mistake we see constantly is downloading a livery-only package and expecting a new aircraft to appear. If the description says that a default, freeware or commercial aircraft is required, install that exact model first. An A320 repaint made for one developer's A320 will not fit every other A320.

Can a livery change the engine or how the aircraft flies?

No: a normal livery can repaint an engine nacelle but cannot change the engine type, thrust, sound or aircraft handling.

An engine livery is simply the artwork on the visible nacelle, cowling, spinner or propeller. Paint alone cannot replace one engine model with another, add winglets, move antennas or convert a passenger aircraft into a freighter. The necessary geometry must exist in the base aircraft.

Some downloads select an existing model variant through configuration data. That may display different engines or other geometry already supplied by the developer, but the texture itself did not create those parts. If the engine shape is wrong or logos are distorted, the repaint was probably installed on the wrong variant.

Large, high-resolution textures can consume additional storage and graphics memory, increase loading time and cause stutters when many different liveries are visible. That is a computer-performance effect, not a change to the simulated aircraft's performance.

How do MSFS liveries, RealFlight colour schemes and airline simulator liveries differ?

The visual purpose is similar across simulators, but the packages are not interchangeable.

The phrase “real flight simulator livery” can therefore mean either a realistic real-world paint scheme or a colour scheme for the RealFlight simulator. Check the named platform before downloading. How do I know if a flight sim livery is compatible?

A flight sim livery is compatible only when its simulator, base aircraft, developer and physical variant all match.

  • Simulator and generation: MSFS 2024, MSFS 2020, X-Plane, FSX and Prepar3D use different packaging systems. Compatibility should be stated, not assumed.
  • Exact aircraft product: match the developer or publisher as well as the real aircraft type.
  • Aircraft variant: fuselage length, passenger or cargo configuration, engine option, wing type and door layout may change the texture mapping.
  • Dependencies: some repaints need a separate base aircraft, expansion or model variant.
  • Distribution platform: manually installed PC packages cannot simply be copied into console editions of a simulator.
  • Package notes: read any stated minimum build, conversion or update requirement before replacing files.

The technical reason is UV mapping, which tells the simulator where each part of a flat image belongs on the three-dimensional model. Two developers can model the same real aircraft but use entirely different texture layouts. A file with the expected name may still appear blank, mirrored or badly misaligned on the wrong model.

How are aircraft liveries installed?

A livery must be extracted or imported into the location expected by its simulator and exact base aircraft.

  1. Read the requirements first. Confirm the simulator, aircraft developer, variant and any dependency.
  2. Extract the download. A simulator generally cannot read a livery left inside its downloaded archive.
  3. Preserve the package structure. Do not rename texture folders, move individual files or merge configuration sections unless the instructions specifically require it.
  4. Restart and select the correct variant. The livery may appear only under the passenger, cargo or engine option for which it was made.

MSFS PC add-ons commonly use a complete package in the configured add-on location, X-Plane aircraft commonly use their own liveries directory, and older Microsoft-based simulators often need both a texture folder and an aircraft configuration entry. Missing liveries are most often caused by an absent base aircraft, incorrect folder nesting, a mismatched variant or an incomplete configuration entry.

Can I create my own aircraft livery?

Yes, provided you have a paint kit or editable texture templates made for the exact aircraft model.

The usual work involves editing layered artwork, keeping logos inside the correct UV areas, preserving transparency and material channels, exporting to the required texture format, and packaging the files for the target simulator. File dimensions, compression, names and alpha channels matter: artwork can look correct in an image editor yet appear transparent, excessively glossy or black in the simulator.
