What is an aircraft livery in flight simulation?

An aircraft livery in flight simulation is the visual paint scheme applied to a specific aircraft model. Across flight simulators, it changes external markings such as airline colours, registration, logos and special artwork, but normally does not alter the flight model, cockpit systems or performance. Simmers also call a downloadable livery a repaint.

What does an aircraft livery change?

An aircraft livery changes texture files wrapped around the aircraft’s three-dimensional model. Depending on the aircraft and simulator, these files can control:

  • Fuselage, wings, tail and engine colours
  • Airline names, logos and fleet markings
  • Military insignia, squadron codes or historic paint schemes
  • Registration numbers and aircraft names
  • Surface properties such as gloss, metallic appearance and roughness
  • Optional cockpit, cabin or crew textures

A texture cannot normally change the aircraft’s physical shape. For example, paint alone cannot add winglets, antennas or different engines; the base aircraft must already contain that geometry. Some packages select an existing model variation, but that is more than a simple colour change.

Registrations can also cause confusion. A livery may have a number permanently painted into its texture, while the simulator uses a separate registration or callsign for menus and air traffic control. Unless the aircraft supports dynamic registration text, changing the simulator setting will not replace the painted number.

Livery, repaint or complete aircraft?

In normal flight-simulation use, livery and repaint usually describe the same downloadable visual modification, while a paint kit and a complete aircraft are different products.

Does a livery change how the aircraft flies?

No, a normal livery does not change an aircraft’s aerodynamics, engine behaviour, systems or handling. Those characteristics belong to the base aircraft and its flight-model configuration.

High-resolution textures can affect computer performance, however. A large collection may consume more storage, increase loading time and use more graphics memory when several liveries appear together. That is different from changing the simulated aircraft’s performance.

Older simulator repaints sometimes require a new aircraft configuration entry. That entry should identify the texture and menu details only; replacing unrelated configuration sections can change behaviour or break other liveries, so back up edited files first.

How do I know whether a livery is compatible?

A livery is compatible only when it was made for the correct simulator, aircraft developer, model and variant. Two add-ons depicting the same real aircraft can use completely different three-dimensional meshes and texture layouts.

  • Match the simulator: packages for Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane, FSX, Prepar3D and FS2004 use different structures.
  • Match the exact aircraft: a repaint for one developer’s A320 will not automatically fit another developer’s A320.
  • Match the variant: engine type, fuselage length, cargo version and wing configuration can matter.
  • Check dependencies: some liveries require a separate base aircraft or expansion.
  • Read version notes: compatibility between different generations of a simulator should not be assumed unless the creator confirms it.

The underlying reason is the model’s UV mapping, which determines where each part of a flat texture appears on the aircraft. Even a correctly named texture will look distorted or blank when mapped onto the wrong model.

How are aircraft liveries installed?

Installation depends on the simulator and package format, but the livery must be extracted into the location expected by its base aircraft. Microsoft Flight Simulator commonly uses a complete add-on package, X-Plane aircraft usually have a dedicated liveries folder, and older Microsoft-based simulators often use a texture folder plus an aircraft configuration entry.

Why is my downloaded livery not showing?

A livery usually fails to appear because it targets the wrong aircraft, has not been extracted, sits one folder too deep or depends on a base model that is missing. Incorrect configuration entries and renamed texture folders are frequent causes in FSX-era simulators.

Can I create my own aircraft livery?

Yes, but a usable repaint must start with a paint kit or texture templates made for that exact aircraft. The artist edits the supplied layers, preserves required dimensions and transparency channels, exports to the correct texture format, and adds any configuration data needed by the simulator.
