AirwaySim is a browser-based airline-management simulator, not a cockpit flight simulator. You create an airline in a shared, time-progressing game world, acquire aircraft, schedule routes, set fares and manage staff, maintenance and finances. You can operate more than 350 historically dated aircraft models, subject to the world’s era and availability.
How does AirwaySim work?
AirwaySim simulates the commercial and operational decisions behind running an airline while the actual flights happen automatically. Other human-controlled airlines occupy the same world, competing for passengers, airport slots, aircraft and profitable routes.
- Join a game world: Each world has its own historical period, time progression and operating rules. The date determines which aircraft and airports are practical or available.
- Establish an airline: Choose a base airport, company identity and initial business strategy. A major hub offers more demand but usually brings stronger competition and tighter slot availability.
- Acquire aircraft: Lease or purchase suitable aeroplanes through the new and used markets. New aircraft can involve production queues, while used examples may arrive sooner but carry age and condition penalties.
- Open and schedule routes: Match capacity and frequency to simulated passenger or cargo demand, set fares and build aircraft schedules around flight time, turnaround and maintenance requirements.
- Manage the operation: Monitor load factors, revenue, staffing, fuel, maintenance, delays, fleet commonality and cash flow. Expanding faster than the airline can finance is a common route to failure.

Do you fly the aircraft yourself?
No. AirwaySim does not provide a cockpit, flight controls or real-time piloting. Your job is to decide which aircraft operates each route, build its weekly schedule and keep the airline financially and operationally healthy.
Flights are processed by the game as time advances. Their results depend on factors such as route demand, frequency, pricing, aircraft capacity, airline image, competition and disruption rather than the player’s flying skill.
Which aircraft are available in AirwaySim?
The database contains more than 350 aircraft models and variants spanning several generations of airline history. The exact selection depends on the calendar date and game world, so these are representative families rather than a guaranteed list for every session.

Variants matter. Two aircraft from the same family can have different engines, range, runway requirements, capacity and fuel consumption. Can you operate any aircraft immediately?
No. Aircraft access is restricted by historical availability, market supply, delivery time and your airline’s finances.
- Game date: A type normally becomes available around its real-world introduction period and may leave production later.
- Market supply: The used market only offers aircraft that are listed or otherwise supplied within that world. The ideal model may not be available when you need it.
- Airport limits: Runway length and airport suitability can rule out an aircraft even when its published range appears adequate.
- Payload and range: Maximum range rarely means maximum payload over that distance. Long sectors may require fewer passengers or less cargo.
- Configuration: Passenger, cargo and combi versions are separate operational choices where those variants exist.
How should you choose an AirwaySim aircraft?
Choose the smallest aircraft that can serve the route reliably at the frequency passengers need while still producing an acceptable margin. Purchase price alone is a poor guide because fuel, maintenance, staffing, utilisation and fleet-commonality costs continue for every flight.
- Use turboprops or regional aircraft when demand is modest, sectors are short or runway performance matters.
- Use narrow-body jets for frequent short- and medium-haul routes with enough demand to fill them consistently.
- Use wide-bodies only when route demand and range justify their high trip costs and large seat count.
- Keep fleet groups under control: Operating many unrelated types creates extra training and maintenance overhead. Check the game’s fleet-group classification rather than assuming visually similar variants share commonality.
What aircraft-selection mistakes cause problems?
The most damaging mistake is buying an impressive aircraft before identifying a profitable job for it. A half-empty wide-body can lose money even when every available passenger chooses your airline.
- Comparing aircraft by seat count while ignoring trip cost, frequency and route demand
- Using nominal range without allowing for payload and runway restrictions
- Adding several fleet families during rapid expansion and creating heavy commonality costs
- Buying ageing used aircraft without budgeting for maintenance and reduced reliability
- Filling every minute of a schedule without leaving room for required maintenance
- Committing all available cash to aircraft and leaving no reserve for salaries, fuel, marketing or weak early routes
A practical first fleet is usually one readily available family that fits several routes from the chosen base. Standardise where possible, prove that the schedules earn money, and add a second fleet group only when a clearly different route or capacity requirement justifies its overhead.
