Annunciator lights tell pilots that a system has changed state, needs attention or has failed, using labels and colour priorities rather than colour alone. Cockpit panels are backlit by lamps or LEDs behind translucent legends and instruments, supplemented by flood or spot lights, with separate dimmers for different panel zones.
In real-world aviation and the flight simulators that reproduce it, annunciation and panel illumination are separate functions. Backlighting makes controls readable; an annunciator communicates a specific condition. A panel can therefore be softly illuminated while every annunciator is dark, or show a bright warning even when its general lighting is turned down.
What information does an annunciator light show?
An annunciator identifies a system state such as low pressure, an open valve, a failed generator, unsafe landing gear or equipment that has been selected on. It may be a dedicated lamp, part of an illuminated pushbutton, or a message generated on an electronic display.

These conventions are widespread but not universal. The aircraft's label, flight manual and checklist take precedence over a colour assumption. The same colour can also serve slightly different purposes between general-aviation aircraft, airliners and military types.

A master warning or master caution is an attention-getter, not the complete diagnosis. Acknowledging it usually silences or resets the master indication, but it does not correct the fault; the associated light or display message must still be identified.
Does an extinguished annunciator mean the system is off?
No. A dark annunciator can mean normal operation, a condition that is not present, no electrical power, or a failed lamp or display element. Some aircraft follow a “dark cockpit” philosophy in which monitored systems show few lights when everything is normal, while others illuminate normal status indications.
Use the aircraft's lamp-test function where one is provided. It confirms that the lamps or annunciator display can illuminate, but it does not prove that the monitored sensor or system itself is healthy. Cross-check the relevant gauge, system page and checklist rather than diagnosing a fault from one lamp alone.
How are cockpit panels backlit at night?
Cockpit panels use several lighting methods together because legends, instruments, electronic displays and work surfaces need different illumination.
- Integral or edge lighting: lamps or LEDs feed light into a panel lightplate so that engraved or translucent lettering glows without brightly illuminating the surrounding cockpit.
- Instrument lighting: traditional gauges contain their own internal lamps, often controlled as a separate group from panel legends.
- Electronic display lighting: glass displays have independent brightness controls and may also adjust automatically through a light sensor.
- Flood, spot and utility lights: these illuminate larger areas, individual controls, charts or the centre pedestal. They are not technically panel backlighting.

Annunciators may have fixed brightness, automatic day/night levels or their own bright-and-dim logic. Warning lights are normally designed to remain conspicuous even when general panel lighting is low, although the exact behaviour depends on the aircraft.
Why are cockpit lights dark in a flight simulator?
Dark simulator lighting is usually caused by missing electrical power, the wrong dimmer, daylight masking a subtle effect or incomplete add-on modelling.

- Move the correct lighting control. Panel, instrument, flood, pedestal and display dimmers are often separate. Some knobs include an off detent or respond to the mouse wheel rather than a simple click.
- Check under darker conditions. Integral lighting can be almost invisible in bright daylight. Test at dusk or shade the cockpit before deciding that the effect is broken.
- Run the lamp test. If every annunciator illuminates, the dark lamps probably reflect system state. If none illuminate, check power and brightness; if only one fails, the aircraft may model a failed lamp or have a gauge fault.
- Compare aircraft and control methods. A generic simulator command labelled “panel lights” may operate only flood lighting. How bright should cockpit lighting be at night?
Set cockpit lighting to the lowest level that leaves instruments, labels and checklists comfortably readable. Excessive flood lighting creates windscreen reflections and weakens the outside scan, while displays set too low can hide markings and alert information.
Balance each zone rather than turning every control to maximum. In a simulator, exposure or high-dynamic-range rendering can exaggerate the contrast, but monitor brightness should not be used to compensate for one incorrectly adjusted cockpit dimmer.
