ATIS vs AFIS: what is the difference?

ATIS is a one-way, repeating broadcast of an aerodrome’s weather, runway, approach and operational information. AFIS usually means Aerodrome Flight Information Service: a person provides two-way traffic information and an alerting service at a non-controlled aerodrome, but does not issue air traffic control clearances. The terms are not interchangeable.

In Aviation & Real-World Flying terms, the practical rule is simple: listen to ATIS, but call AFIS. An aerodrome can have either service or both, so the presence of ATIS does not reveal whether traffic is controlled.

Which frequency should a pilot use first?

If an aerodrome publishes both services, obtain ATIS first and then contact AFIS on its separate frequency.

  1. Check the chart or aerodrome information. Confirm the published frequencies, service hours and local procedures. Outside AFIS hours, the aerodrome may become unattended, use another type of service or close altogether.
  2. Listen to ATIS. Copy the current identifier, wind, runway, QNH or altimeter setting and any operational restrictions. Do not attempt to transmit on an ATIS frequency.
  3. Call AFIS. Give your callsign, position and intentions using the phraseology required by that country. Mention the ATIS identifier if local procedures request it.
  4. Maintain pilot responsibility. Use the traffic information to sequence and separate yourself as required. AFIS information does not transfer command responsibility from the pilot in command.

Can AFIS clear an aircraft to take off or land?

An AFIS officer does not independently issue an ATC take-off or landing clearance. The service reports known traffic and runway conditions so the pilot can act under the applicable national and aerodrome procedures.

The exact authority is jurisdiction-dependent. In some countries, a flight information service officer may issue instructions to aircraft and vehicles on the ground, or relay a clearance issued by another ATC unit. An AFIS aerodrome can also lie beneath or within controlled airspace. Any required airspace clearance still comes from the responsible ATC unit, even if AFIS relays the message.

Can an aerodrome have both ATIS and AFIS?

Yes. ATIS can handle repetitive weather and runway information while the AFIS frequency handles live traffic reports and pilot calls.

The Lausanne scenery package for FSX provides a practical simulator example whose airport information lists separate ATIS and AFIS frequencies. In a simulator, however, a listed AFIS frequency does not guarantee a functioning human-style information service. Scenery can update airport data without adding the radio logic needed to answer calls.

What mistakes are commonly made with ATIS and AFIS?

  • Calling ATIS as though it were a controller: ATIS is receive-only from the pilot’s perspective, so nobody will answer.
  • Treating AFIS as a control tower: the word “Information” in the callsign is a strong clue that the station is providing information rather than ATC clearances.
  • Using an old ATIS code: weather or runway changes may replace the message while the aircraft is taxiing or approaching. Confirm the latest identifier when practical.

  • Ignoring operating hours: AFIS is often available only during published periods. Never assume that a frequency shown in a simulator or navigation database is continuously staffed.

Does AFIS always mean Aerodrome Flight Information Service?

No. In the ICAO-style aerodrome context, AFIS generally means Aerodrome Flight Information Service. Some regions, avionics systems and commercial products use AFIS for Automatic or Automated Flight Information Service instead.

Check the chart legend, national publication or product documentation rather than relying on the acronym alone. If the service involves a live two-way aerodrome information frequency, it is the Aerodrome Flight Information Service described here; if it is an automated broadcast or data product, its purpose and operating method may be different.
