Landing lights vs taxi lights explained: compare their purpose, beam, brightness, mounting and correct use on real aircraft and in flight simulators.
In aviation, landing lights are high-intensity, forward-facing lights designed to illuminate the runway during take-off and landing and make the aircraft conspicuous. Taxi lights are typically lower-intensity, wider-beam lights aimed at the pavement close ahead so the crew can steer safely on the ground without dazzling nearby pilots or ground staff.

The practical distinction is range and purpose: landing lights throw useful light farther ahead, while taxi lights spread it across the ground immediately in front of the aircraft.

These are typical characteristics, not universal design rules. Position alone does not identify a light because different aircraft place the same type of light in very different locations.
Why are landing lights brighter and more focused?
Landing lights must illuminate runway markings and surface detail from farther away and at considerably higher speeds. Their concentrated beam also helps other traffic and people on the ground see an approaching or departing aircraft.
Brightness cannot always be compared by lamp wattage. LED design, reflectors, lenses, mounting angle and beam distribution all affect how much useful light reaches the runway.
Can landing lights be used while taxiing?
Landing lights can provide extra illumination while taxiing, but they should not be used indiscriminately because their intense beam can dazzle another crew, a marshaller or ramp staff.
They may be selected when entering or crossing a runway, operating on a particularly dark surface or following an aircraft-specific checklist. Near stands and other aircraft, the taxi light is normally the more considerate choice. Procedures vary by aircraft, operator and country, so follow the applicable checklist rather than treating either light as mandatory in every situation.

Do all aircraft have separate landing and taxi lights?
No; an aircraft may have separate fixtures, two lamps in one housing, selectable modes from a shared assembly or no dedicated taxi light at all.
- Many airliners have separate landing, taxi and runway-turnoff lights.
- Some light aircraft place landing and taxi lamps together but give each a different reflector and beam angle.
- A taxi light mounted on steerable nose gear may turn with the nosewheel, while a fixed light continues pointing along the aircraft centreline.
- Some helicopters use an adjustable landing or search light rather than an aeroplane-style fixed arrangement.
Runway-turnoff lights are another source of confusion. They cast light outwards to help the crew see taxiway exits and tight turns; they are not simply additional landing lights.
How can I identify landing and taxi lights in a flight simulator?
Use the cockpit switch labels and aircraft documentation, not the appearance or mounting position of the simulated fixture.
- Operate each switch separately. Look for controls labelled landing, taxi, nose or runway turnoff.
- Test at dusk or night. A landing light should project farther ahead; a taxi light should illuminate a broader area close to the nose.
- Check control assignments. A generic all-lights command or duplicate controller binding may make both systems switch together even when the aircraft models them separately.
If the lamp illuminates externally but casts no light on the pavement, that usually indicates a limitation or fault in the aircraft's lighting effect rather than incorrect operation. Some simplified simulator aircraft also combine both functions deliberately.
Are taxi and landing lights the same as navigation lights?
No; navigation lights indicate the aircraft's orientation, while landing and taxi lights illuminate ahead and may improve conspicuity.
