What does an autopilot disconnect warning mean? Learn what stops, why it happens, what remains active and how pilots respond safely.
An autopilot disconnect warning means the automatic flight-control system has stopped commanding the aircraft’s flight controls. The pilot must immediately confirm attitude, flight path, airspeed and trim, then fly manually or use another approved guidance mode. A disconnect may be intentional, but an unexpected warning can indicate control input, operating limits or a fault.
What stops working when the autopilot disconnects?
The autopilot stops automatically controlling the aircraft’s flight path through its servos or flight-control computers. Pitch and roll control return to the pilot; automatic yaw control may also be affected, depending on the aircraft and system.
This does not necessarily switch off the flight directors, autothrottle or autothrust. Flight-director bars may continue displaying guidance without physically flying the aircraft, while automatic thrust may remain active. Fly-by-wire control laws and protections can also remain available after the autopilot disengages.

Why does an aircraft autopilot disconnect?
The warning identifies a change in automation status; by itself, it does not identify the cause. Common causes fall into several distinct groups:

Turbulence alone does not have one universal disconnect threshold. It can, however, create control forces or deviations that exceed a particular system’s limits. An unexpected disconnect should therefore be treated as a loss of automation until the aircraft is stable and the cause is understood.
What should a pilot do after an unexpected disconnect?
The correct response is to fly the aircraft first, confirm which automation was lost, and then apply the type-specific checklist.
- Take control. Hold the required attitude, set suitable power and monitor airspeed. Be ready for an out-of-trim force when assuming manual control.
- Confirm the disconnect. Check the autopilot status and acknowledge the aural or visual alert using the procedure specified for that aircraft.
- Read the mode indications. Establish whether the flight director, autothrottle or autothrust, navigation modes and any other autopilot channels remain active. Do not mistake visible flight-director bars for an engaged autopilot.
- Stabilise and trim. Correct the flight path without chasing abrupt indications, then trim the aircraft to reduce control pressure.
- Identify the cause. Review associated cautions and follow the aircraft flight manual, checklist or operator procedure. Do not repeatedly reset or re-engage a system when a fault or uncommanded control input remains present.
- Protect the approach. If the disconnect removes a required autoland or low-visibility capability, or the approach becomes unstable, initiate the prescribed missed approach. An intentional disconnect during normal flight is routine, not an emergency. An unexpected disconnect becomes serious when the crew cannot maintain control, cannot establish why it occurred, or loses automation required for the phase of flight.
Can the warning be silenced and the autopilot re-engaged?
Many aircraft use one press of the control-wheel or sidestick disconnect switch to disengage the autopilot and another press to acknowledge the warning. Other types use different controls or alert logic, so the aircraft’s approved procedure takes precedence. A persistent or repeating warning may mean it was not acknowledged, or that the autopilot is repeatedly attempting to engage and disconnect.
Re-engagement is appropriate only when the aircraft is stable, properly trimmed, inside the permitted engagement envelope and free of a fault that prohibits autopilot use. After an unexplained disconnect, re-engaging immediately can hide the symptom or produce another abrupt handover.
