What flight simulator realism settings should beginners use?

Beginners should use a realistic flight model with failures and aircraft damage disabled, calm weather, light or no traffic, visible tooltips and checklists, and only the control assists their hardware requires. Keep autorudder on without rudder control, then remove navigation and handling aids one at a time as take-offs, circuits and landings become consistent.

In general-purpose flight simulators including Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane, FSX and Prepar3D, the labels differ but the principle is the same: make the aircraft behave truthfully without making every mistake end the session. A sensible beginner realism preset

Start with realistic aerodynamics, a forgiving environment and limited consequence settings.

Which assists should beginners keep enabled?

Keep aids that provide information, but disable assists that secretly move the flight controls for you.

  • Keep: interactive checklists, instrument tooltips, control prompts and taxi guidance while learning cockpit layout and airport procedures.
  • Use conditionally: autorudder, automatic mixture and simplified engine management when the required control axis or hardware is unavailable.
  • Disable for manual-flight practice: AI piloting, assisted yoke, assisted take-off, assisted landing and automatic trim. These can mask poor technique or fight the pilot, autopilot and trim system.

An accessibility aid or hardware workaround is not a training failure. If it makes the simulator controllable, retain it and remove only those aids that interfere with the skill being practised. Should beginners use a realistic flight model?

Yes—beginners should learn with credible aerodynamics from the start rather than compensate for difficulty with an arcade-style flight model. A stable trainer, calm weather and correctly configured controls make learning easier without teaching the wrong control responses.

A mistake we see constantly is reducing flight realism because the aircraft feels twitchy. The usual causes are duplicate axis assignments, excessive sensitivity, control noise, poor calibration or failure to trim. Calibrate every axis, confirm that controls return to centre, remove duplicate bindings and use only enough dead zone to stop unwanted movement; our control-selection and calibration guide covers the hardware side.

Do not select a legacy or compatibility flight model merely because it feels easier. Use one only when an older aircraft add-on was designed for it and its documentation says so.

When should you turn realism aids off?

Remove one aid only after you can repeat the relevant task without relying on it.

  1. Establish a baseline: use the same forgiving trainer, familiar airport, long runway and clear weather until basic control inputs feel predictable.
  2. Remove control-writing assists: disable assisted take-off, landing and automatic trim. Practise straight-and-level flight, climbs, descents, coordinated turns and trimming before judging the aircraft’s handling.
  3. Remove visual guidance: hide route markers, landing gates or taxi ribbons after you can read the instruments, follow a circuit and identify taxiways yourself.
  4. Add one workload source: introduce a small crosswind, more traffic, reduced visibility or manual engine management—not all of them together.
  5. Enable consequences last: turn on damage, structural stress and planned failures once you can fly several circuits without pausing, rewinding or losing control.

What if the aircraft is still difficult to control?

Fix the aircraft choice, trim and controller setup before weakening the flight physics.

  • Unexpected yaw or rolling: check for two devices assigned to the same axis, such as pedals and a joystick twist both controlling the rudder.
  • Constant pitching: trim for the present speed and power rather than holding continuous pressure on the stick or yoke.
  • Controls fighting back: disconnect the autopilot and disable AI or assisted-control options before manual flight.
  • Wild response near full deflection: reduce aggressive sensitivity curves and make smaller inputs; do not use a large dead zone unless the hardware is noisy.
  • Every landing feels rushed: switch from a fast jet or complex airliner to a basic piston trainer and stabilise the approach earlier.

The best beginner realism setting is therefore not “easy” or “maximum”. It is a custom setup that preserves believable aircraft behaviour while temporarily removing failures, harsh weather and workload that do not serve the lesson being practised.
