What are the best add-ons for Trainz 2022?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Find the best add-ons for Trainz 2022, from routes and rolling stock to Surveyor assets, plus compatibility and missing-dependency fixes.

The best Trainz Railroad Simulator 2022 add-ons are complete routes with supplied sessions, matching rolling-stock packs and supported community assets installed through Content Manager. Start with Coal Country or C&O Hinton Division for North American freight, and Cornish Mainline and Branches or ECML Edinburgh–Dundee for British operations, after checking each package’s TRS22 compatibility.

Which Trainz 2022 add-ons are worth installing first?

A well-packaged route is the best first add-on because it provides a railway, compatible rolling stock and sessions designed to work together.

North American coal operationsCoal CountryA detailed, compact railway suited to switching, local freight and coal traffic.Confirm that every older dependency is recognised by TRS22.

British main-line and branch runningCornish Mainline and Branches – TRS22A useful mixture of passenger, freight and branch-line work in one package.Choose the release explicitly labelled for TRS22 rather than an older similarly named edition.
British express passenger runningECML Edinburgh–DundeeLong-distance running, varied stations and the Forth Bridge section make it a strong Driver-mode route.Allow for longer loading times and check whether it is already included with your edition.

For Surveyor, we favour a consistent collection of procedural track, roads, vegetation, signals and interactive industries over hundreds of unrelated scenery objects. Assets from one coordinated set usually match visually and are easier to maintain.

Rolling-stock packs are best chosen to match a route and period. Look for a functioning cab, appropriate sounds, compatible couplers, documented dependencies and at least one working session. A beautiful locomotive with unavailable KUID dependencies is not a useful add-on.

Should I choose packaged DLC or community content?

Choose packaged DLC for the easiest installation, and community content through Content Manager when you want greater variety or route-building assets.

  • Packaged routes: Usually combine the route, sessions and major rolling stock, reducing the risk of unknown dependencies.
  • Content Manager assets: Offer the broadest selection of routes, vehicles, track and scenery, but quality and maintenance vary considerably.
  • Manual CDP files: Use these only when the source and dependency instructions are clear. A CDP does not guarantee that every required asset is included.

This open content system is one of Trainz’s defining strengths. Our comparison of Trainz and Train Sim World’s different add-on models explains why Trainz offers more building freedom but demands more dependency management.

How do I install Trainz 2022 add-ons safely?

Install one add-on at a time, inspect its dependencies in Content Manager and test its supplied session before adding anything else.

  1. Update TRS22 first. Run the simulator’s normal updater so Content Manager recognises assets built for your supported Trainz version.
  2. Check the local data location. Trainz keeps its content database separately from the main installation, so confirm that this drive has enough free space and back up irreplaceable custom work.
  3. Install one route or pack. Use the launcher’s built-in package installer, Content Manager, or File > Import Content Files for a documented CDP.
  4. Inspect the route in Content Manager. Use List Dependencies and download any available missing items. An asset marked Unknown Location is not available through Content Manager and may make the package unusable without its original dependency set.
  5. Run the supplied session. This tests scripts, signals, industries, portals and rolling stock more thoroughly than merely opening the route in Surveyor.
  6. Save edits as a separate copy. Avoid modifying packaged originals directly, because an update or revert operation can replace those changes.

A mistake we see constantly is importing a large collection before testing any of it. When something then becomes faulty, there is no clear way to identify which package introduced the problem.

Why do Trainz 2022 add-ons fail or run badly?

Most Trainz 2022 add-on problems come from missing KUID dependencies, content built for a newer Trainz release, edited packaged assets or routes that never included a Driver session.

  • Missing Dependencies: Open the asset’s dependency list and work through the missing items. Check dependencies recursively, because a locomotive may depend on a cab that itself requires scripts, sounds and textures.
  • Faulty: View the listed errors rather than deleting the asset immediately. If an installed package was accidentally modified, reverting that package to its original state may fix it; never do this to unique custom work without a backup.
  • Open for Edit: Submit intentional edits or revert accidental ones. Content left open can prevent updates and validation from completing correctly.
  • Unsupported build: The asset may target Trainz Plus or another newer content standard. Do not lower the trainz-build value in its configuration file; changing the number does not add the missing simulator features.
  • No playable session: Some downloads are routes only. Create a new Driver session or obtain a session specifically made for that route and revision.

Large routes, high-resolution textures and dense scenery can also expose hardware limits. Install one major route at a time and adjust draw distance, shadows and scenery detail if necessary; our guidance on hardware demands for train simulators on laptops covers the main performance trade-offs.

Large imports can trigger content validation and database processing, so allow that work to finish before forcing Trainz to close. If the simulator stops launching after an installation, follow our Trainz startup and database-repair checks rather than immediately deleting the entire local data folder.
