Train Sim World vs Trainz: compare driving, graphics, route building, mods, consoles, TRS22 and value to choose the right train simulator.
Train Sim World is better for realistic, guided driving, detailed cabs and polished graphics, particularly on consoles. Trainz is better for building routes, creating operating sessions and using a vast range of community assets on desktop computers. Choose Train Sim World mainly to drive; choose Trainz mainly to build and control a railway.
Here, Trainz means the modern desktop family, including Trainz Railroad Simulator 2022, rather than every mobile or older Trainz-branded product. Exact Surveyor features, included content and subscription benefits vary by Trainz edition. Train Sim World route bundles, inherited add-ons and editor support likewise depend on the release and platform.
Train Sim World vs Trainz at a glance
The decisive difference is that Train Sim World puts the driver and a finished route first, while Trainz treats the railway itself as something the player can construct and configure.
| Area | Train Sim World | Trainz |
|---|---|---|
| Main activity | Driving timetable services, scenarios and free-roam consists | Building, editing, driving and operating custom railways |
| Cab experience | Detailed first-person cabs, tutorials and train-specific controls | Ranges from simplified DCC control to scripted cab operation |
| Graphics | More consistent cab detail, lighting and close-range scenery | Can look excellent, but asset quality varies by creator and age |
| Route creation | Specialist PC editor; not an in-game console route builder | Surveyor is a central part of the desktop simulator |
| Railway operations | Authored timetables and route-specific service layers | Custom industries, consists, AI drivers, portals and session rules |
| Mods and community content | Liveries, scenarios and a comparatively restricted modding ecosystem | Large catalogue of routes, rolling stock, scripts and scenery assets |
| Best platform fit | PC and consoles, with strong controller support | Desktop use with a mouse and keyboard |
Which has better graphics and driving realism?
Train Sim World normally provides the better-looking and more convincing first-person driving experience. Its detailed locomotive interiors, lighting, weather presentation and trackside environments make it feel as though the player occupies a working cab rather than controls a model railway from above.
That does not make every locomotive equally realistic. Brake behaviour, adhesion, safety systems, power changeovers and start-up procedures vary between add-ons. A well-modelled Trainz locomotive may simulate particular systems in considerable depth, while an older or simplified asset may provide little beyond basic throttle and brake controls.
Trainz represents a different type of realism. It lets the user assemble consists, dispatch AI traffic, configure industries and write operating sessions around a railway of their own design. Train Sim World is stronger at representing a driver’s assigned work; Trainz is stronger at representing the railway around that driver.
Visual fidelity, cab procedure and operational accuracy are separate measures. Our guide to how realism differs across train simulators explains why no single product leads every category.
Which is better for route building, mods and railway operations?
Trainz is decisively better for route building and extensive user-created content. Surveyor can shape terrain, lay and connect track, place spline-based scenery, configure interactive industries, assemble rolling stock and define sessions using the same broad content system as the simulator.
Train Sim World has editing tools on PC, but they use a development-oriented workflow rather than Trainz’s integrated Surveyor approach. Sharing and deploying complete routes is also more constrained, and console players do not receive a general-purpose route editor. Scenario, livery and free-roam tools can rearrange supported content, but they do not let the player build an unrestricted railway from bare terrain.
Trainz also gives the user more responsibility. A route may depend on hundreds of separately installed assets, some produced for much older editions. Mixed generations of track, vegetation, buildings and rolling stock can create visual inconsistencies or compatibility warnings.

How do Trainz Railroad Simulator 2022 and other Trainz names fit in?
Trainz Railroad Simulator 2022 (TRS22)
Trainz Railroad Simulator 2022 is a desktop Trainz release and fits the Trainz side of this comparison. It provides the characteristic combination of Surveyor, driving, sessions and asset management, although included routes and access to newer creation features differ between standard, premium and subscription-based offerings.
Do not assume that every screenshot or tutorial labelled TRS22 applies to every licence. Check the named edition when a particular Surveyor tool, collaborative function or content collection matters to the purchase.
Is Trainz Simulator World Tour the same product?
Trainz Simulator World Tour should not be treated as another name for Trainz Railroad Simulator 2022. If a listing uses the World Tour name, verify its target platform, included routes, control scheme and creation tools. Content ownership and route-building features should not be assumed to transfer between separate Trainz products.
Is Pro Train compatible with Trainz?
Pro Train is not automatically a Trainz compatibility label. Railway products and add-ons with similar names may require a different host simulator. The description must explicitly name a compatible Trainz release or asset build; visual similarity and the word train in the title prove nothing.
Does Train Sim World 7 change the comparison?
Train Sim World 7, commonly shortened to TSW7, does not change the central verdict: it remains a driving-first simulator rather than a Trainz-style construction platform. The generation number matters less than the routes, locomotives and platform ecosystem attached to the package.
Before choosing a TSW7 bundle, check three things: whether its included routes cover the country and traction you want, whether previously owned add-ons are supported on the same platform family, and whether those add-ons contribute services to the routes you intend to drive. Owning a locomotive does not guarantee that it appears in every timetable.
A newer core release also does not include the entire back catalogue. Compatible inherited content may remain separately installed, and an older route does not necessarily receive every feature developed for newer routes. Our guide to selecting a Train Sim World edition for beginners and experienced drivers covers that choice in greater detail.
Are Trainz and Train Sim World infinite?
Neither simulator is infinite. Train Sim World uses finite, authored routes with defined drivable boundaries. Distant scenery, portals and inaccessible connecting lines may make a route appear larger, but they do not form an endlessly generated network.
Trainz routes can be expanded by adding baseboards and, where content is compatible, merging layouts. That makes Trainz far less restrictive for a large personal railway, but practical limits still come from memory use, storage, asset density, performance and the time required to build it. It does not generate an automatic infinite world.
Another common misconception is that two Train Sim World add-ons become one continuous line merely because their real railways meet. Unless the content was specifically designed or updated to work as a connected route, each remains its own authored map.
Which is easier for beginners and better as a train sim hobby?
Train Sim World is easier for a beginner who wants to drive, while Trainz offers the deeper construction and content-management hobby. Train Sim World supplies tutorials, objective markers, controller-friendly interfaces and pre-built timetables. It is the straightforward choice for PlayStation or Xbox users.
Tutorials do not teach every signalling system or locomotive quirk. A mistake we see repeatedly is enabling several safety systems at once, receiving an emergency-brake application and not knowing which warning was missed. Learn the basic train controls first, then add one safety system at a time.
Trainz can get a newcomer moving quickly through simplified DCC-style controls. Its real learning curve begins with Surveyor, Content Manager, session rules, AI instructions and dependencies. Those tools reward patience and are usually easier with a mouse and keyboard.
Value follows the same split. Train Sim World is good value when its included routes match the region, era and traction the player actually wants. Trainz can provide years of building and modification, but some of that time will be spent locating dependencies, replacing obsolete assets and repairing sessions. For many Trainz users, that maintenance is part of the train sim hobby rather than an interruption to it.
What common problems appear after purchase?
Most problems come from buying the wrong bundle, overlooking a dependency or assuming that similarly named content is interchangeable.
- A Train Sim World add-on is missing: Confirm that it is owned and installed through the same platform account as the base simulator. Console and PC purchases do not generally transfer between unrelated storefront ecosystems.
- A locomotive has no timetable services: Some trains require a particular route, service layer or companion add-on. Being visible in the collection does not mean the locomotive has work on every route.
- A Trainz route has missing scenery or track: Use Content Manager’s dependency information to identify missing assets. Reinstalling the route alone will not provide dependencies stored as separate packages.
- An older Trainz asset is faulty: Check its intended Trainz build and dependencies before editing it. Simply increasing the
trainz-buildvalue does not update old scripts, textures or configuration syntax. - Trainz performance collapses on one route: The route may contain unusually dense scenery, high-detail rolling stock or expensive scripted assets. Reduce draw distance and scenery settings to isolate the cause before replacing working content.
- Train Sim World applies an unexplained emergency brake: Check vigilance, signalling and train-protection systems individually. Restarting without identifying the active system usually reproduces the same stop.
Train Sim World or Trainz: which should you choose?
Choose according to the activity you expect to spend most of your time doing, not the length of the feature list.
- Choose Train Sim World for detailed cab driving, authored services, guided learning, consistent modern presentation and console play.
- Choose Trainz for route construction, custom operating sessions, AI traffic, industries, large personal layouts and extensive community assets.
- Choose Train Sim World first if you are new to train simulation and mainly want to drive a finished route with a controller.
- Choose Trainz first if your main aim is to design, modify and operate your own railway on a desktop computer.
- Consider owning both if you want polished first-person driving and a separate railway-building workshop. Their strongest features overlap less than their similar subject matter suggests.
