For FSX and FSX: Steam Edition, the best upgrade is a modern desktop CPU with excellent single-thread performance and sustained clock speed. Pair it with a modest dedicated graphics card for 1080p, or a mid-range card for 1440p, 4K, heavy anti-aliasing or multiple monitors; an expensive flagship GPU rarely improves FSX frame rates.
Which CPU is best for FSX?
FSX performs best on a processor with fast individual cores rather than the highest total core count. Its simulation and rendering workload is dominated by a main thread, although other cores can help with supporting tasks, add-ons and programs running alongside the simulator.
For a new FSX PC, we recommend a modern six- or eight-core desktop processor selected by its single-thread benchmark results. Intel and AMD processors both work well. Compare performance rather than clock speed alone, because 5 GHz on one processor architecture is not necessarily equivalent to 5 GHz on another.
- Prioritise: strong single-thread performance, sustained boost speed and adequate cooling.
- Do not prioritise: 12, 16 or more cores purely for FSX. The simulator cannot spread its main workload efficiently across them.
- For laptops: favour a model that can sustain its CPU speed under load. A thin laptop processor with the same family name as a desktop chip may run considerably slower after heating up.
A modern upper-mainstream CPU is normally the sensible ceiling for an FSX-only computer. Complex aircraft, busy AI traffic and detailed airports can still reduce frame rates because no processor can remove every limitation in this older engine.
How much graphics card does FSX need?
FSX needs far less graphics power than a modern flight simulator, but resolution, anti-aliasing, clouds, water effects and post-processing can increase the load substantially. It primarily uses DirectX 9, with an optional DirectX 10 Preview mode, and has no native use for ray tracing, frame generation or modern AI upscaling features.

Our practical pairing: a modern six- or eight-core CPU with excellent single-thread performance and a mid-range 8 GB graphics card gives FSX ample graphics headroom without wasting most of the hardware budget. For stock FSX at 1080p, an entry-level dedicated GPU is enough; even capable integrated graphics may run it, though a dedicated card provides more predictable drivers, memory and display support.
GeForce and Radeon cards can both run FSX. Rasterisation performance, mature legacy DirectX support and the required monitor connections matter more than ray-tracing specifications. Before buying a faster card, check which FSX visual settings actually increase GPU load.
How do I tell whether FSX needs a CPU or GPU upgrade?
Lowering the resolution is the quickest way to distinguish a CPU bottleneck from a graphics bottleneck in FSX.
- Create a repeatable test: save a flight at a demanding airport and keep the aircraft, weather, view and traffic settings unchanged.
- Record the frame rate: test at the normal resolution with the usual anti-aliasing settings.
- Reduce graphics load: lower the resolution sharply and disable or reduce anti-aliasing, clouds and demanding water effects.
- Compare the result: if performance barely changes, the CPU or simulator engine is limiting the frame rate. If it rises clearly, the graphics card is contributing to the bottleneck.
- Check per-core activity: one or a few heavily loaded logical cores alongside modest total CPU and GPU usage is typical of a CPU-limited FSX installation.

Why can a new graphics card still run FSX badly?
A new graphics card will not cure poor FSX performance when the processor, configuration or an add-on is the actual limit.
- The display is connected incorrectly: on a desktop, connect the monitor to the dedicated graphics card rather than the motherboard video output.
- FSX is using integrated graphics: on a dual-GPU laptop, assign
fsx.exeto the high-performance graphics processor in Windows or the graphics driver settings. - An old configuration was copied: back up
FSX.cfgand allow FSX to generate a fresh file after a major hardware change, then reapply only the necessary settings. - The frame rate is CPU-limited: low GPU utilisation is normal when FSX is waiting for its main simulation thread.
- The laptop is throttling: use mains power, an appropriate performance mode and unobstructed cooling vents.
Will more RAM or an SSD improve FSX?
More RAM and an SSD improve general usability, but neither replaces a faster CPU or GPU. Both boxed FSX and FSX: Steam Edition are 32-bit applications, so adding large amounts of system memory does not remove the simulator's per-process virtual-address limit.
For a modern PC, 16 GB of system RAM is comfortable for FSX and ordinary background programs; 32 GB is useful when running many external tools or newer simulators, but it does not directly raise FSX frame rates. An SSD shortens loading times and can reduce pauses caused by asset access, while sustained low frame rates remain a CPU or graphics issue.
