What display resolution and settings are best for FSX?
Find the best FSX resolution and display settings for 1080p, 1440p, 4K and widescreen, plus fixes for stretching, blur and tiny menus.
For FSX and FSX: Steam Edition, the best baseline is your monitor’s native resolution at 32-bit colour, with anti-aliasing enabled, anisotropic filtering, WideViewAspect=True on widescreen displays, and a 30 fps frame target. Lower resolution only when GPU performance or an unusably tiny 4K interface makes native resolution impractical.
FSX baseline: the best display settings
This FSX baseline gives normal FSX play a sharp image without wasting processor time on expensive visual effects.

A 30 fps target is a starting point, not a requirement. Use 60 fps if the simulator can sustain it during demanding flights; avoid Unlimited unless testing or using another reliable frame limiter, because FSX may spend processor time drawing extra frames while scenery falls behind.
How do I set the correct resolution in FSX?
Set full-screen FSX to the resolution Windows identifies as recommended for that monitor.
- Check the native resolution. Open Windows Display Settings and note the recommended dimensions, such as
1920 × 1080,2560 × 1440or3840 × 2160. - Open FSX’s display settings. From the main screen, open Settings and the display customisation controls, then select the Graphics page.
- Choose the matching full-screen mode. In an entry such as
2560 x 1440 x 32, the final 32 means 32-bit colour; it is not the refresh rate. - Apply the baseline. Enable anti-aliasing, choose anisotropic filtering and begin with a 30 fps target.
- Test a representative flight. Use your normal aircraft, add-on airport, weather and traffic rather than an empty rural location.
- Change one setting at a time. This shows whether resolution, traffic, scenery or an effect is responsible for the loss of performance.
One mistake we see repeatedly is reducing resolution when AI traffic, autogen, weather or scenery complexity is limiting the CPU. If a large resolution reduction produces little frame-rate improvement, return to native resolution and work through the FSX settings that reduce CPU load before image quality.
Should I use 1080p, 1440p or 4K in FSX?
Use the monitor’s native mode unless cockpit readability or a confirmed GPU bottleneck gives you a reason to choose a lower one.
- 1080p: Use
1920 × 1080on a native 1080p panel. Menus and older bitmap gauges are usually easier to read than at higher pixel densities. - 1440p: Use
2560 × 1440on a standard 1440p monitor. It provides more cockpit detail than 1080p without the pixel load or tiny interface of 4K. - 4K: Use
3840 × 2160when the interface remains readable and the graphics card can sustain it. Anti-aliasing can be reduced if GPU performance becomes the limit. - Ultrawide: Select the panel’s native ultrawide dimensions and enable

What is the best stretched screen resolution for a 1440p monitor?
There is no beneficial stretched resolution for FSX; 2560 × 1440 is the best choice for a native 16:9 1440p monitor.
Unlike a competitive game where someone may deliberately distort the image, FSX depends on correct proportions for round instruments, cockpit geometry and runway perspective. If you intentionally use 4:3, preserve its aspect ratio and accept black side bars rather than stretching it across the screen.

The phrase “1080p stretched” can also mean displaying ordinary 1920 × 1080 on a 1440p panel. That remains 16:9, so it is scaled and blurred rather than geometrically stretched. A true aspect-ratio stretch happens when a 4:3 image fills a 16:9 screen.
How do I set WideViewAspect in FSX and Steam Edition?
Set WideViewAspect=True in the active FSX.cfg file to correct the 3D field-of-view calculation on widescreen displays.
- Close FSX. The simulator can overwrite configuration changes made while it is running.
- Locate the active configuration file. It is normally under
%APPDATA%\Microsoft\FSXor%APPDATA%\Microsoft\FSX-SE. Steam Edition may use a different one when boxed and Steam installations have coexisted; the active file’s timestamp changes after an FSX setting is altered. - Back up FSX.cfg. Keep a copy before editing it with a plain-text editor.
- Edit the existing Display section. Under
[Display], add or change the line toWideViewAspect=True. Do not create a duplicate[Display]section. - Save and restart. Adjust virtual-cockpit zoom afterwards if the view appears too wide or too close.
This setting does not repair a 4:3 resolution stretched by the monitor, and it cannot redesign an older 4:3 2D panel. If the proportions remain wrong, use our widescreen resolution, scaling and field-of-view checks.
Is anti-aliasing CPU or GPU intensive in FSX?
Anti-aliasing is principally a GPU workload, even though FSX itself is often limited by CPU performance.
Higher resolutions, anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering increase graphics-card work and memory bandwidth use. Autogen, AI traffic, complex aircraft systems, scenery draw calls and parts of the weather engine place much more pressure on FSX’s main processor thread.
- If lowering resolution or disabling anti-aliasing gives a clear gain, the GPU was probably the limiting component.
- If those changes barely affect fps, the main processor thread is probably the limit.
- At 4K, try less anti-aliasing before lowering the resolution; the extra pixel density already hides much of the stair-stepping.

How do I fix FSX’s tiny 4K interface?
Try Windows display scaling first, then use a lower 16:9 full-screen resolution if FSX’s menus, labels or older gauges remain too small.
- Restart FSX after changing scaling. The legacy interface may not respond correctly until the application is reopened.
- Check every important dialog. Windows scaling can enlarge parts of FSX while clipping buttons or leaving some aircraft panels unchanged.
- Try 2560 × 1440. It keeps the 16:9 shape and offers a compromise between readability and sharpness.
- Try 1920 × 1080 for the largest interface. It has the same 16:9 proportions and maps evenly across a 4K pixel grid, although display scaling can still make the picture softer than native 4K.
- Resize panels or adjust cockpit zoom. This can solve an aircraft-specific readability problem without reducing the whole simulator’s resolution.
A lower same-ratio mode is preferable to stretching 1920 × 1440 or another 4:3 resolution across a 4K screen.
Is full-screen or windowed mode better for FSX?
Full screen is best for an uncluttered fixed-resolution image, while windowed mode is more convenient for charts, utilities and multiple displays.
The resolution selector mainly controls full-screen mode. In windowed mode, FSX uses the Windows desktop resolution and renders inside the chosen window size. Press Alt+Enter to switch modes; standard FSX does not offer a true borderless-window choice in its display menu.
Why is FSX blurry, stretched or missing my resolution?
These faults usually come from non-native scaling, an aspect-ratio mismatch or a display mode that Windows has not exposed to FSX.
- Blurry image: Return Windows and FSX to the monitor’s native resolution. Any lower resolution expanded over the panel will lose sharpness.
- Stretched image: Select a mode with the panel’s real aspect ratio. For an intentional 4:3 mode, choose aspect-ratio scaling rather than full-panel stretching in the monitor or graphics controls.
- Native mode missing: Confirm Windows can select it, close FSX and reopen it. Remote sessions, virtual displays and changed monitor connections can affect the modes detected at start-up.
- Black screen after switching: Press

FSX size: does monitor size or resolution change the answer?
Physical monitor size does not determine the correct FSX resolution; the panel’s native pixel dimensions do.
A 24-inch and a 32-inch monitor can require different scaling while sharing the same resolution. Changing display resolution also does not change the FSX installation size: boxed and Steam Edition installations, add-ons and cached files vary, so check the actual simulator folder when calculating storage needs.
