What are the best flight simulator accessories and devices?

Ian Stephens
In short

Compare the best flight simulator accessories—joysticks, yokes, pedals, throttles, head tracking and panels—and learn what to buy first.

The best flight simulator accessories are a quality joystick or yoke, a separate throttle and rudder pedals, chosen for the aircraft you fly. For general flight simulation, add head tracking before specialist cockpit panels because it improves every circuit and approach. Simulator, computer and console compatibility matters more than the badge on the box.

A twist-grip joystick is the best single device for mixed flying; specialised controls become better when most of your time is spent in one aircraft category.

Which devices are worth buying first?

Buy controls in an order that fixes genuine limitations rather than making the desk resemble a cockpit.

  1. Choose the primary controller. Start with a joystick, yoke or gamepad appropriate to the aircraft. A joystick with twist rudder and a built-in throttle provides the most capability in one device.
  2. Secure the controls. A rigid desk clamp or mount improves precision more than another row of buttons. Check desk thickness, knee clearance and chair movement before ordering hardware.
  3. Add a separate throttle. Longer travel makes power changes easier, while extra axes support mixture, propeller pitch, spoilers or multiple engines.
  4. Add rudder pedals. They improve crosswind control, coordinated turns, taxiing and differential braking. Helicopter, glider and taildragger pilots may want pedals before a separate throttle.
  5. Improve the view system. Head tracking is usually the next best-value upgrade. VR offers greater immersion but has higher performance, compatibility and comfort demands.
  6. Add cockpit panels last. Radio, autopilot and switch panels save mouse work, but they do not compensate for vague primary controls.

Our breakdown of essential PC flight-sim controls covers the minimum equipment and sensible upgrade paths in more detail.

Joystick, yoke or HOTAS: which is best?

A joystick is the best all-round flight simulator controller because it suits light aircraft, airliners with sidesticks, helicopters, gliders and military aircraft while using little desk space.

  • Choose a joystick for versatility, compact storage or aircraft with a centre stick or sidestick. Look for smooth centring, enough buttons, a usable throttle lever and twist rudder if you will not buy pedals immediately.
  • Choose a yoke when you mainly fly yoke-equipped general-aviation aircraft or airliners. Check pitch travel, centre feel, clamp depth and clearance beneath the desk.
  • Choose a HOTAS for combat simulation. Keeping major controls on the throttle and stick reduces reliance on the keyboard during manoeuvring.
  • Choose a gamepad for occasional flying, a living-room setup or portability. Analogue sticks work adequately, but short travel makes trimming and precise approaches harder.

For MSFS users, our comparison of controller types for Microsoft Flight Simulator explains where gamepads, joysticks, HOTAS systems and yokes each fit.

Sensor-resolution figures alone do not determine control quality. Mechanical smoothness, centre behaviour, grip comfort and secure mounting usually matter more during an approach.

Are rudder pedals worth buying?

Rudder pedals are worth buying if you fly helicopters, gliders, taildraggers, warbirds or light aircraft, or want realistic crosswind landings and taxi control.

Choose pedals with toe brakes if you need differential braking. Smooth movement and stable spacing matter more than decorative metalwork, while adjustable spring force is useful if several people use the setup.

A mistake we see constantly is leaving rudder assigned to the pedals, joystick twist and gamepad at the same time. Clear the duplicate axes, assign only one device to Rudder Axis, calibrate it and add only enough dead zone to stop genuine sensor noise. Our practical guide to simulator rudder control also explains twist grips, toe brakes and auto-rudder.

Is head tracking or VR the better upgrade?

Head tracking is the better practical upgrade for most desktop pilots because it preserves access to the keyboard and physical controls while making traffic scanning, circuits and cockpit interaction easier.

VR provides stronger depth perception and cockpit scale, but the simulator, platform and headset must all support it. It also increases graphics demand, makes physical panels harder to see and may cause discomfort during longer sessions. An extra monitor is often more useful for charts or instruments than for extending the outside view, especially if graphics performance is already limited.

A headset with a clear microphone is useful for online ATC and multiplayer flying, although ordinary speakers or headphones are sufficient for solo simulation.

Do flight simulator accessories work on every platform?

No flight-simulation peripheral is universally compatible; support must be checked against the operating system, console and individual simulator.

PlatformWhat to verifyCommon mistake
PCOperating-system drivers, simulator recognition and available axis bindingsAssuming every USB panel works without a plug-in or manual profile
Xbox Series X|SExplicit Xbox compatibility and support from the chosen simulatorBuying a PC-only USB controller because the connector fits
PlayStation 5Explicit PS5 and game compatibilityAssuming Xbox or generic PC flight hardware will be recognised

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 launched on PS5 and PS5 Pro on 8 December 2025; Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 remains limited to PC and Xbox. For MSFS 2024, PSVR2 support is tied to a free 2026 update rather than the original PlayStation release.

USB hubs do not convert an unsupported controller into a console-compatible one. On PC, an unpowered or overloaded hub can also cause intermittent disconnects, so displays and illuminated panels may need separate power.

Which cockpit panels are worth buying?

Radio and autopilot panels are worthwhile when they replace controls you operate repeatedly; generic button boxes offer more flexibility across different aircraft.

Replica panels look convincing but may have limited value outside their intended cockpit. Check that the required plug-in or control protocol supports your simulator, and remember that latching physical switches can disagree with a loaded aircraft's virtual switch positions until moved.

Advanced builders can use USB interface boards, displays and custom enclosures. Our instructions for building a USB-connected instrument panel cover that route without treating an expensive replica cockpit as the default.

What flight simulator accessory mistakes should you avoid?

Most wasted money comes from buying for a dream cockpit rather than the aircraft, platform and desk actually being used.

  • Do not buy a yoke solely because it appears more serious; it is the wrong primary control for many aircraft.
  • Do not ignore mounting dimensions, cable routing, pedal movement or a wheeled chair that rolls backwards under braking.
  • Do not pay extra for throttle detents unless their positions can be calibrated to the aircraft you fly.
  • Do not leave duplicate pitch, roll, throttle, brake or rudder bindings active across several devices.
  • Do not buy cockpit panels before confirming simulator support and the software they require.

For most simmers, the strongest setup is a smooth joystick or yoke, secure mounting, a separate throttle, rudder pedals and head tracking. Everything after that should solve a specific problem rather than merely add switches.
