Which flight simulator is best for VATSIM?

Ian Stephens
In short

Discover the best flight simulator for VATSIM, with PC requirements, pilot-client options and practical advice for choosing MSFS or X-Plane.

For most PC pilots, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is the best flight simulator for VATSIM: it combines clear airport visuals, broad aircraft and scenery support, and straightforward vPilot compatibility. Choose X-Plane 12 instead when desktop platform flexibility, IFR procedure practice, or its flight-model focus matters more than scenery.

Which simulator should a new VATSIM pilot choose?

For a new Windows PC setup, we recommend Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 unless you already have a dependable aircraft and add-on collection in another simulator.

SimulatorBest forTypical pilot clientMain caveat
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 on PCBest overall choice for new VATSIM pilots, especially those flying airliners or relying on visual airport detailvPilotDemanding hardware and incomplete compatibility with some older add-ons
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 on PCEstablished aircraft, scenery and model-matching installationsvPilotOlder base simulator; changing to 2024 may require checking every important add-on
X-Plane 12IFR practice, flight-model emphasis, macOS or Linux users, and highly configurable installationsxPilotAirport appearance and ground detail vary more without additional scenery

Microsoft Flight Simulator's detailed airports make taxi instructions easier to follow, while its large aircraft ecosystem gives pilots plenty of suitable general-aviation and airline options. Our broader comparison of MSFS, X-Plane and Prepar3D covers performance, add-ons and platform differences in more depth.

Do not choose on visuals alone. A familiar aircraft with dependable radios, transponder controls and navigation systems is more useful on VATSIM than a sophisticated add-on whose FMS or autopilot you cannot operate under pressure.

When is X-Plane 12 better for VATSIM?

X-Plane 12 is the better VATSIM simulator when you need macOS or Linux support, prefer its flight-model approach, or already use it for structured IFR practice.

Its xPilot client handles the network connection, while model-matching or CSL packages determine how nearby traffic appears. Poor model matching may show the wrong aircraft type or a generic livery, but it does not stop you receiving ATC.

The choice is particularly close for procedure training. Our focused comparison of X-Plane 12 and MSFS for training explains the differences in IFR work, aircraft handling and visual navigation.

Can you use VATSIM on Xbox or PlayStation?

No. VATSIM requires a separate pilot client, so the normal VATSIM workflow is limited to compatible desktop simulators.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is available on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro, but those console editions cannot run vPilot. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 on Xbox has the same restriction. Console multiplayer is not a substitute for VATSIM's controller network.

What do you need for your first VATSIM flight?

You need a supported desktop simulator, its matching pilot client, a controllable aircraft and enough radio knowledge to follow basic ATC instructions.

  1. Install the correct pilot client. Use vPilot with supported Microsoft Flight Simulator installations and xPilot with X-Plane. Check compatibility with your exact simulator version before changing an established setup.
  2. Learn one aircraft first. You should be able to hold headings and altitudes, tune COM1, operate the transponder and fly the type of departure or approach placed in your flight plan.
  3. Configure audio before connecting. Select the correct microphone and headphones in the pilot client, then confirm that COM1 receive and transmit are active in the aircraft.
  4. Prepare the route. Check procedures against the aircraft's navigation database. A cycle mismatch can produce missing waypoints or a different SID or STAR; tell ATC promptly if you cannot accept a clearance.
  5. Connect from a parking position. Never appear on an active runway or taxiway. Start at a quieter airport if you are still learning the radio flow.

Our guide to setting up the client and preparing a first VATSIM flight covers the practical training sequence. A virtual airline is optional; you can also use live online ATC as an independent pilot.

Common VATSIM setup failures

  • No ATC audio: verify the pilot client's input and output devices, aircraft electrical power, COM1 volume, active frequency and receive selection.
  • Generic or incorrect traffic: install and correctly reference a model-matching package. This is a display problem, not a network-connection failure.
  • Unexpected route differences: compare the filed route with the aircraft's loaded procedure before departure rather than discovering the mismatch after clearance.
  • Unstable frame rate: reduce traffic detail, airport complexity or demanding visual settings. Smooth control response matters more than maximum graphics settings during an approach.
  • Too much aircraft complexity: begin with equipment you can confidently fly. VATSIM controllers expect compliance or a clear statement that you are unable; they do not require a study-level airliner.

Our overall recommendation is MSFS 2024 on PC for a new all-round VATSIM installation, MSFS 2020 for pilots protecting a proven add-on setup, and X-Plane 12 for cross-platform desktop use or a stronger emphasis on procedural and flight-model practice.
