Compare the best Orbx airport scenery add-ons, from LOWI and EGLC to major hubs, with compatibility, performance and scenery-conflict advice.
The best Orbx airport scenery add-ons are LOWI Innsbruck, EGLC London City, NZQN Queenstown, ESSA Stockholm Arlanda, YMML Melbourne and YBBN Brisbane. For general flight simulation, LOWI is our strongest all-round choice, but the right purchase depends on your simulator, usual routes, surrounding scenery and tolerance for a demanding hub.
Best Orbx airport scenery add-ons by flying style
LOWI Innsbruck is the most versatile choice because it combines airliner operations, general aviation and a famously demanding Alpine approach.
| Airport | Best for | Why we recommend it | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| LOWI Innsbruck | Best overall | Challenging approaches, a distinctive terminal and useful airline and GA operations. | Mountain mesh and aerial imagery outside the airport strongly affect the result. |
| EGLC London City | Urban short-field flying | Steep-approach operations, a short runway and an unusually dense city setting. | London landmark, city and photogrammetry packages can create overlap or heavy frame rates. |
| NZQN Queenstown | Mountain flying | A dramatic setting suited to regional airliners, business jets and visual approaches. | The airport cannot correct poor terrain or imagery beyond its coverage area. |
| ESSA Stockholm Arlanda | European airline routes | A large Scandinavian hub with varied terminals, aprons and short- to long-haul route options. | Large apron areas, traffic and parked aircraft can increase CPU and GPU load. |
| YMML Melbourne | Australian long-haul operations | A major international field with complex ground movements and a broad route network. | Check performance and ensure another YMML package is not active. |
| YBBN Brisbane | Australian domestic and international flying | Useful for domestic sectors, Pacific routes and wide-body operations. | Check for overlap with separate Brisbane city, landmark or regional packages. |
These airports are not interchangeable. Someone flying Dash 8 sectors around Scandinavia will get more value from ESSA than from a visually impressive airport used once. Our criteria for judging flight-simulator scenery explain why layout accuracy, lighting, performance and compatibility matter more than screenshot detail alone.
Which smaller Orbx airports are worth considering?
For regional and general-aviation flying, smaller Orbx airports can offer better value and performance than a major international hub.
- EGNM Leeds Bradford suits UK regional airline flying and challenging weather operations.
- KTIW Tacoma Narrows is a strong Pacific Northwest choice for light aircraft and short local flights.
- EGPB Sumburgh works well for remote island operations, crosswinds and North Sea routes.
- KPSP Palm Springs is a useful legacy-platform choice for desert approaches and regional US flying.
Availability and detail vary between MSFS, FSX, Prepar3D and X-Plane editions. Never buy from screenshots or reviews of a different simulator version; models, ground textures, animations, dependencies and surrounding coverage may not match.
Are all Orbx airport products actually made by Orbx?
No; Orbx develops its own scenery but also distributes products from partner developers, so an airport listed in its catalogue is not automatically an Orbx-built airport.
Check the named developer, supported simulator and required dependencies rather than relying on the sales channel. Our breakdown of Orbx airport, regional and landmark products explains how these product categories fit together.
Will Orbx airport scenery work in my simulator?
Orbx airport scenery works only with the simulator editions named for that specific product; matching airport names do not make FSX, Prepar3D, X-Plane and MSFS packages interchangeable.
- MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024: verify that the exact package supports your simulator. A 2020 airport may load in MSFS 2024 without every feature working correctly, and an updated edition may be required.
- FSX and Prepar3D: check the precise simulator generation and any Orbx Libraries, base scenery or regional-pack requirements. Prepar3D compatibility should never be assumed across major versions.
- X-Plane: confirm the supported major version and inspect
scenery_packs.iniif the airport, Global Airports or custom mesh appears in the wrong order. - Xbox and PlayStation: only products offered through the simulator's in-sim catalogue for that console can be installed. A PC installation cannot simply be copied to a console.
For Microsoft's newer simulator, consult our simulator-specific MSFS 2024 airport recommendations before assuming an older package is the best edition to buy.
How do I prevent duplicate buildings and low FPS?
Keep only one detailed rendition of an airport active, satisfy its dependencies and adjust traffic before reducing visual quality across the whole simulator.
- Confirm the ICAO and simulator edition. Similar product names can hide different platform releases or obsolete versions.
- Remove duplicate renditions. Check installed content and, on MSFS PC, the
Communityfolder for another package covering the same ICAO. If an external library creates a link into that folder, do not also copy in a second physical installation. Our guide to combining multiple MSFS airport add-ons covers the safe arrangement. - Respect scenery order. In FSX and Prepar3D, the detailed airport normally belongs above regional and base scenery. In X-Plane, the airport should sit above Global Airports, while custom mesh belongs lower. Do not delete default simulator files manually.
- Avoid two sources of parked aircraft. If the scenery offers a no-static-aircraft option, use it when AI or live traffic already populates the gates.
- Tune the settings that affect airports. Reduce parked aircraft, airport vehicles and object detail first. Lower texture resolution mainly when video memory is the limiting factor.
- Test after each change. Load the same gate, aircraft, weather and time of day so a scenery conflict is not mistaken for normal variation in simulator load.
Do I need an Orbx region pack as well?
MSFS airports are usually standalone unless their product details state otherwise, while many FSX and Prepar3D Orbx airports were designed for a matching regional package.
A legacy airport may install without that region yet show mismatched roads, autogen, coastlines or a sharp colour boundary around its coverage. At scenic destinations such as Innsbruck and Queenstown, complementary terrain can improve the approach substantially, but it must not introduce a second airport rendition or conflicting mesh.
