Which USA terrain add-on is best for each simulator?

There is no cross-simulator mesh format. An FSX terrain file will not work in X-Plane or Microsoft Flight Simulator, even when all three products cover the same geographic area.

What does a terrain mesh actually improve?

A terrain mesh changes the shape of the ground: ridge lines, valleys, cliffs, plateaus and slopes. It does not normally change the photographic or landclass texture drawn over that shape.

  • Pure mesh improves elevation while retaining the simulator’s existing textures and scenery objects.
  • Orthophoto scenery replaces ground textures with aerial imagery and may include its own mesh.
  • Landclass and autogen control terrain categories, buildings and vegetation rather than elevation.
  • Airport scenery adds runways, terminals and local elevation adjustments.

If the terrain contours look wrong, install mesh. If the hills have the right shape but the ground appears generic or blurry, mesh alone will not solve the problem; an orthophoto or texture package is the better choice.

How should you choose between nationwide and regional mesh?

Choose broad coverage for varied cross-country flying and regional scenery when a smaller area needs better source data or photographic detail.

  • Use FreeMeshX USA LOD12 as the general FSX or Prepar3D foundation for the contiguous United States.
  • Choose the western 10 m project instead when mountain routes are the priority. Installing two similar-resolution meshes over the same area does not combine their best data.
  • Choose the Texas ortho package when surface imagery matters as much as elevation in X-Plane.
  • Use a combined package for isolated regions such as Hawaii, where coastlines, water masking, airports and mesh need to match.

Pure elevation mesh is usually the more storage-efficient option. Orthophoto packages occupy considerably more disk space and can expose colour changes or seams where adjacent imagery was captured under different conditions.

Why does an installed terrain mesh look unchanged?

A mesh usually appears ineffective because it is inactive, covered by another base mesh, displayed at a coarse terrain setting or expected to replace textures.

  1. Confirm compatibility. Check the exact simulator and, for Prepar3D or X-Plane, the supported generation. Similar-looking scenery formats are not interchangeable.
  2. Check the folder depth. In FSX and Prepar3D, the enabled scenery area must point to the package level containing its scenery structure. In X-Plane, the package belongs under Custom Scenery without an accidental extra wrapper folder.
  3. Review terrain settings. FSX and Prepar3D must not be set to a coarser mesh resolution than the installed data. A 10 m or LOD12 source loses much of its purpose when the simulator is configured to display substantially coarser terrain.
  4. Resolve overlapping scenery. FSX and Prepar3D generally select the finest available elevation data, so merely moving a mesh higher in the Scenery Library may not beat a finer conflicting file. In X-Plane, only one base mesh can supply a given tile; keep airport and overlay scenery above the chosen base mesh in scenery_packs.ini.
  5. Test without airport scenery. Airport flattening files can create plateaus, trenches or cliffs even when the surrounding mesh is correct. Temporarily disable the local airport package to identify the conflict.

A mistake we see constantly is judging a mesh by runway markings, roads or texture sharpness. Compare a recognisable mountain ridge or valley profile instead; those are features the elevation data can actually change.

Do MSFS 2020 and 2024 need a full USA mesh add-on?

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024 already provide streamed elevation and ground imagery across the United States, so a nationwide legacy-style replacement is rarely necessary.

Use local terrain corrections where the default data produces a malformed mountain, sunken shoreline, water hill or airport elevation fault. If terrain suddenly appears coarse over a much wider area, check online data access and the simulator’s cache before assuming a mesh add-on is required.

FSX, Prepar3D and X-Plane packages cannot be copied into MSFS. PC users need scenery built specifically for their MSFS version, while Xbox and PlayStation users are limited to add-ons supported through the simulator’s platform distribution system.
