Which RC flight simulator should you choose?
RealFlight Evolution is our default recommendation unless you have a specialised requirement. Its mix of powered aeroplanes, gliders, helicopters and training functions makes it suitable for a first RC model as well as repeated practice between trips to the flying field.
Choose aerofly RC 10 when fixed-wing flying, scale aircraft and visual quality matter most. For collective-pitch helicopter practice, AccuRC 2 gives model setup and flight behaviour greater emphasis, while neXt is a practical alternative for concentrated hovering, orientation and aerobatic drills.

Do you need an RC transmitter for a PC simulator?
No, an RC transmitter is not mandatory, but a transmitter-style controller gives the most transferable practice. A gamepad can run most simulators, yet its short stick travel, different spring arrangement and limited switches do not feel like an RC radio.
- Dedicated simulator controller: The easiest option because Windows sees it as a controller without a radio link or separate receiver. RealFlight's InterLink controller is the least troublesome pairing for that simulator.
- Your own transmitter: Best for matching the stick tension, mode and switch positions used at the field. It needs a compatible USB interface or wireless receiver.
- Joystick or gamepad: Acceptable for evaluating software and learning basic orientation, but less useful for precise throttle, collective and rudder control.

- Check Windows detection. Open

Start without transmitter-side expo, mixing or unusual channel curves unless the simulator specifically requires them. Applying radio and simulator adjustments together causes double expo and incorrect mixing.
- Map the four primary controls. Verify throttle, rudder, elevator and aileron or their helicopter equivalents. Check Mode 1 or Mode 2 explicitly rather than accepting automatic assignments.
- Calibrate inside the simulator. Centre the sticks when requested, move every axis fully, and confirm that no channel is reversed.
- Add switches last. Assign rates, flight modes, retracts or throttle hold only after the basic controls work correctly.
A mistake we see constantly is trying to repair bad calibration with trim. If an aircraft rolls or yaws with centred sticks, inspect the Windows axis display, simulator calibration and transmitter mixing before trimming the virtual model.
Are free RC flight simulators good enough?
Yes, free RC simulators are good enough for orientation, circuits, approaches and basic glider practice, but paid software usually offers more models, stronger training tools and easier controller configuration.

Can an RC simulator teach you to fly a real model?
An RC simulator can teach control orientation and repeatable manoeuvres, but it cannot replace a competent instructor for the first real flight. Its greatest benefit is letting you practise the moment an aircraft turns towards you, when left and right appear reversed and beginners often make the wrong correction.
Practise rectangular circuits in both directions, figure eights, stable approaches, go-arounds and dead-stick landings. Helicopter pilots should add tail-in, side-in and nose-in hovering before moving to circuits or aerobatics.
Real models still introduce depth-perception errors, wind gradients, radio procedures, battery management and mechanical failures that a home simulator may simplify. Use the simulator to make control inputs automatic, then use an instructor and a properly checked trainer aircraft to handle the risks the software cannot reproduce.
