Why is FlightGear scenery missing, and how do I fix it?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Fix missing FlightGear scenery by checking TerraSync, scenery paths, folder structure, permissions and incomplete tile downloads.

FlightGear shows no scenery when a terrain tile is absent, TerraSync cannot download it, or the simulator is reading the wrong folder. Enable TerraSync with a writable directory, wait for the tile to finish, then verify each manual scenery root contains Terrain and Objects and appears in FlightGear’s scenery paths.

How can I tell what scenery is missing?

The symptom usually identifies whether FlightGear is missing terrain, objects or both. Test at a known airport on land before changing anything; an incorrect airport code or starting position over the sea can look like a scenery fault.

How do I fix TerraSync not downloading scenery?

TerraSync needs an enabled automatic-download option, network access, free storage and permission to write to its chosen directory.

  1. Enable TerraSync. In the FlightGear launcher, find the setting labelled TerraSync or automatic scenery download. Its exact location varies between releases.
  2. Choose a writable directory. Keep downloaded scenery in a normal user-data folder rather than a protected application directory such as Program Files. Confirm the drive has adequate free space.
  3. Check network access. A firewall, proxy, security suite or restricted network can prevent TerraSync from retrieving tiles even though FlightGear itself launches normally.
  4. Allow the first tile to finish. Loading an airport before its surrounding data has arrived may leave the aircraft over water or sparse terrain. Wait for downloads to settle, close FlightGear, then start the same location again.
  5. Inspect the log. References to TerraSync connection failures, permission errors or missing scenery paths point to the underlying fault more reliably than the image on screen.
  6. Test with a clean directory. If the cache may be damaged, close FlightGear, rename the existing TerraSync folder and select a new empty folder. Preserve the old folder until the test succeeds so that it can be restored without another full download.

If TerraSync is unavailable or the computer must remain offline, an extracted offline HD world scenery package is the practical alternative. Install only the required coverage if storage is limited.

Where should manual FlightGear scenery be installed?

FlightGear must be pointed at the scenery root immediately above folders such as Terrain and Objects, not at either folder itself.

  1. Extract the archive completely. FlightGear cannot normally use scenery that remains inside a compressed download.
  2. Find the actual root. A common mistake is selecting an outer folder when extraction has created a nested structure such as WorldScenery/WorldScenery/Terrain. In that example, the inner WorldScenery folder is the path FlightGear needs.
  3. Add that root to the scenery paths. Use the launcher’s scenery-path controls or the FG_SCENERY setting, depending on how FlightGear is started.
  4. Check path priority. An incomplete custom package placed ahead of TerraSync can take precedence over a working tile. Temporarily remove custom entries, test TerraSync alone, then restore packages one at a time.
  5. Restart at the affected airport. This avoids mistaking scenery retained from the previous session for a successful path correction.

Our FlightGear scenery installation instructions cover extraction, search paths and coverage checks in more detail.

Why can I see an airport but no surrounding scenery?

Airport and navigation information can load independently of the surrounding terrain and object tiles. Seeing a runway therefore does not prove that scenery for the region is installed.

If the runway sits in water, concentrate on the terrain tile and scenery path. If the ground appears but terminals, buildings or landmarks do not, check the Objects data, wait for TerraSync to finish and restore object-detail options to their defaults.

Should I reinstall FlightGear?

Reinstalling FlightGear rarely fixes missing worldwide scenery because the application and downloaded scenery are stored separately. Reset TerraSync, correct the scenery paths and test without custom packages first.

Repair or reinstall the simulator only when its core data is also missing or damaged—for example, when aircraft, menus or essential resources fail to load. A reinstall will not by itself download every scenery tile.
