What is the best HOTAS for Xbox Series X?

Ian Stephens
In short

The best HOTAS for Xbox Series X, with compact and pedal-equipped alternatives, compatibility checks, setup fixes and buying mistakes to avoid.

The Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS One is the best HOTAS for most Xbox Series X flight-simulation users. It is natively Xbox-compatible, provides a proper separate throttle and twist rudder, and costs less than more elaborate cockpit controls. Choose the T.Flight Full Kit X instead if you also want compatible rudder pedals.

For general Xbox flying, particularly Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, the HOTAS One offers the best balance of compatibility, versatility and simplicity. It works for airliners, light aircraft, helicopters and space or combat titles, although individual games must explicitly support flight controls.

Why is the T.Flight HOTAS One the best Xbox choice?

The HOTAS One wins because it provides the core controls a simulator needs without relying on unsupported PC drivers or adapters.

  • Separate stick and throttle: the two sections can be positioned apart, although they remain joined by a cable.
  • Built-in rudder control: the stick twists, so pedals are optional rather than an immediate extra purchase.
  • Useful expansion path: compatible Thrustmaster rudder pedals connect through the HOTAS rather than acting as a separate generic USB device.
  • Broad aircraft coverage: the single throttle suits most general flying, while the stick has enough assignable controls for trim, views, brakes and autopilot shortcuts.

The compromises are its lightweight construction, limited button count and single throttle lever. It cannot reproduce independent twin-engine throttles or specialised Airbus detents, and worn potentiometers can eventually cause axis jitter. Xbox also has no direct equivalent to the wide range of premium PC-only HOTAS systems.

Best Xbox Series X HOTAS options compared

The right alternative depends on whether you value pedals, desk space or airliner-specific controls more than all-round versatility.

Will any USB HOTAS work on Xbox Series X?

No: Xbox Series X does not accept every PC USB HOTAS, even when the connector fits and the device receives power.

The exact model must support Xbox, and the game must include support for that controller. The console cannot install the desktop drivers required by many premium PC systems. Our overview of which flight-simulation controls Xbox accepts covers the wider compatibility limits.

A mistake we see constantly is buying a similarly named model. The T.Flight HOTAS 4 is intended for PlayStation and PC, while older T.Flight variants are not substitutes for the Xbox-compatible HOTAS One. Check the platform marking on the exact product rather than relying on the T.Flight or VelocityOne family name.

How do you set up a HOTAS on Xbox Series X?

Connect the HOTAS in Xbox mode before launching the simulator, then verify every flight axis instead of assuming the default profile is correct.

  1. Confirm the exact model and game support. Xbox compatibility does not guarantee that every flight game has a ready-made control profile.
  2. Join the control sections. Connect any throttle or supported pedals through the ports specified for that HOTAS, then set its platform selector to Xbox before plugging it into the console.
  3. Connect directly to the console. Avoid an unpowered USB hub during initial setup. If the simulator was suspended through Quick Resume, fully quit it and relaunch after connecting the controller.
  4. Open the simulator’s control settings. Select the HOTAS profile or create one if the game presents a blank layout.
  5. Assign analogue axes. Bind aileron, elevator, rudder and throttle as axes, not as left/right, up/down or increase/decrease commands. Reverse an axis in the settings if it moves in the wrong direction.
  6. Check for duplicate bindings. Remove the gamepad’s flight-axis assignments if stick drift causes interference, and unbind twist rudder after adding pedals.
  7. Tune sensitivity last. Apply only enough dead zone to stop unwanted movement around the centre. A large dead zone hides small inputs and makes approaches harder.

Keeping the Xbox gamepad connected is still useful for cockpit cameras, cursor control and menus. It does not need to duplicate the primary flying axes.

Why is the HOTAS detected but not working correctly?

Most Xbox HOTAS faults come from the wrong operating mode, stale Quick Resume sessions, incorrect axis bindings or two controllers commanding the same control.

  • No device appears: switch to Xbox mode, reconnect directly to the console and relaunch the game. If problems persist, check for a manufacturer firmware update using a Windows PC.
  • The aircraft reacts at full deflection: replace directional button commands with the corresponding analogue axis assignment.
  • The throttle works backwards: enable the simulator’s reverse-axis option rather than remapping it as buttons.
  • The aircraft drifts or oscillates: look for duplicate bindings first, then add a small dead zone. Increasing dead zone cannot repair severe hardware jitter.
  • Rudder pedals are missing: on the Full Kit X arrangement, connect the pedals through the HOTAS pedal socket rather than treating them as a generic console USB peripheral.

Are rudder pedals worth adding?

Rudder pedals are worthwhile for helicopters, coordinated turns, crosswind landings and realistic ground handling, but they are not essential for starting out because the HOTAS One has a twist rudder.

The Full Kit X is the cleaner choice when pedals are already part of the plan. Our breakdown of Xbox-compatible Thrustmaster HOTAS packages explains when the pedal bundle makes sense and when the standard HOTAS One is enough.
