The Boeing C-17 Globemaster III is a four-engine, high-wing military transport built to carry troops, vehicles and outsized cargo over intercontinental distances, then deliver them directly to short or austere airfields. Its other roles include airdrop, aeromedical evacuation, humanitarian relief, disaster response and non-combatant evacuation.

C-17 missions and roles

The C-17 is used wherever a heavy load needs long-range transport, rapid unloading and access to an airfield that a larger freighter may not be able to use.

  • Strategic airlift: moving personnel, vehicles, helicopters, ammunition and supplies between countries or theatres of operation.
  • Tactical delivery: flying cargo directly into shorter, semi-prepared or austere forward airfields.
  • Airborne operations: dropping paratroops, supply pallets and heavy equipment through its rear doors and loading ramp.
  • Aeromedical evacuation: carrying litter and ambulatory patients with medical personnel and mission equipment.
  • Humanitarian operations: delivering food, water, shelters, rescue equipment and emergency vehicles after disasters or during evacuations.

The aircraft can receive fuel in flight, extending its deployment range. It was not designed as a bomber or as a routine aerial-refuelling tanker, although palletised mission systems can broaden what a transport aircraft is asked to do.

C-17 payload and cargo capacity

The C-17 has a quoted maximum payload of 170,900 lb, or about 77.5 tonnes, although the practical load depends on fuel, range, runway conditions and mission equipment.

Representative configurations include:

  • Up to 18 standard 463L pallet positions.
  • One M1 Abrams main battle tank, subject to its configuration and mission limits.
  • Helicopters, armoured vehicles, artillery and other outsized cargo.
  • Up to 102 troops or paratroops.
  • An aeromedical arrangement of up to 36 litter and 54 ambulatory patients.

These are alternative maximum configurations, not loads that can all be combined. Maximum fuel and maximum payload together exceed the permitted maximum take-off weight, so every real or simulated mission requires a fuel-versus-payload decision. The rear ramp, wide cargo hold and configurable roller floor also let crews load cargo without the infrastructure required by a conventional civilian freighter.

Why can the C-17 use short and austere airfields?

The C-17 combines externally blown flaps, powerful thrust reversers and multi-wheel landing gear to operate from airfields that would restrict many aircraft of comparable size.

Engine exhaust flowing across the deployed flaps produces additional lift at low speed. Reverse thrust shortens the landing roll and can let the aircraft back up on the ground without a tug, while the undercarriage distributes its weight across multiple wheels. The design is often associated with operations from runways around 3,500 ft long, but that figure is not an unconditional minimum.

Austere does not mean any patch of dirt. Aircraft weight, wind, elevation, temperature, slope, surface strength, braking action, obstacle clearance and available turning space all affect whether a strip is usable. The same C-17 that can land lightly at a forward field may need a much longer runway when departing with fuel and cargo.

How does the C-17 differ from the C-5 and C-130?

The C-17 bridges the gap between the larger C-5 strategic transport and the smaller C-130 tactical airlifter.

The C-17 is therefore chosen when a load is too large for a C-130 but must be delivered closer to the operating area than a C-5 mission would normally allow. Exact performance varies by aircraft variant, load and conditions.

Is the C-17 still in service and production?

The C-17 remains in military service, but production ended in 2015 after 279 aircraft had been built.

McDonnell Douglas developed the C-17, which first flew in 1991 and entered US Air Force service in 1995. Boeing inherited the programme following its merger with McDonnell Douglas in 1997, so both company names appear in historical references.

Operators include the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, India, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait, plus the multinational Strategic Airlift Capability based in Hungary. These are military fleets; Boeing did not produce an airline passenger or commercial freighter version. How should a C-17 mission be flown in a simulator?

A convincing simulated C-17 mission should combine strategic flight planning with a tactical arrival rather than treating the aircraft as an oversized airliner or an indestructible rough-field transport.

  • Load the aircraft by station: keep the centre of gravity within the add-on's stated limits and check whether its payload screen uses pounds or kilograms.
  • Trade fuel against cargo: do not select maximum values for both and assume the result is legal.
  • Assess the destination: check runway length, width, surface and obstacle clearance at the planned landing weight.
  • Verify what the model simulates: an animated ramp does not necessarily mean cargo weight, drag, airdrop behaviour or ground handling is modelled.
