How do you check KLAX weather step by step?
Use the ICAO identifier KLAX and work from your intended operation time, rather than simply accepting the newest line displayed by an app or simulator.
- Set the planning time: Convert your planned departure and arrival to UTC. METARs normally show an observation group such as
DDHHMMZ, while a TAF prints its own issue and validity periods. Los Angeles changes between Pacific standard and daylight-saving time, so do not use one fixed UTC offset throughout the year. - Retrieve the latest METAR and SPECI: Search for
KLAXthrough an official or operationally accepted aviation weather source. Confirm the observation date and time before reading wind, visibility, cloud, temperature, dew point and altimeter setting. A newer SPECI may supersede the routine METAR after a significant change. AMDorCORversion. Find the prevailing,FM,TEMPOor probability group covering your expected departure or arrival. If your ETA is close to a change group, assess both sides of the transition and allow for delay. - Check the active ATIS: Obtain KLAX ATIS shortly before departure or arrival. What is the difference between KLAX METAR, TAF and ATIS?
METAR, TAF and ATIS are complementary products with different time horizons and purposes.

A METAR has an observation time, not a guaranteed expiry time. Check whether a newer routine report or SPECI exists. A TAF is the principal airport forecast, but it does not describe weather along the whole route or promise conditions at one exact runway threshold.
Where can you find KLAX ATIS?
Obtain KLAX ATIS from the published arrival or departure ATIS service, using the radio, supported digital ATIS equipment, or the relevant flight-simulator ATC interface.

- Copy the information letter and report it on first contact with ATC.
- Check the weather observation time, wind, visibility, ceiling, temperature, dew point and altimeter.
- Record the advertised approaches and landing or departing runways.
- Listen for runway closures, surface conditions and other operational remarks, but do not treat ATIS as a complete NOTAM briefing.

Why can the KLAX METAR, TAF and ATIS disagree?
The reports can disagree because they describe different times, purposes or weather systems, not necessarily because one is wrong.
- Forecast versus observation: The TAF predicts a period of weather; the METAR records what was observed at one time. A forecast change may arrive earlier or later than expected.
- Update timing: An ATIS may have been recorded before a newer SPECI, while a cached weather display may be older than both. Compare timestamps before comparing values.
- Simulator weather: A simulator or add-on weather engine may update on its own cycle, interpolate between stations or generate ATIS from its internal atmosphere. Its wind and pressure can therefore differ from the real KLAX report.
- Operational runway choice: ATC considers traffic, runway availability, procedures and expected weather. Runways in use cannot always be inferred from the METAR wind alone.
KLAX-specific planning traps
Low coastal stratus, visibility changes and assumptions about runway flow cause many KLAX planning errors. The marine layer can produce a low ceiling even when nearby inland conditions look much better; remember that the ceiling is the lowest broken, overcast or vertical-visibility layer, not a scattered layer.
Westerly operations commonly use the Runway 24 and 25 directions, while easterly flow can switch operations to Runways 6 and 7. Treat that only as an expectation. Confirm the runway, approach and transition from ATIS and the ATC clearance before configuring the aircraft or finalising a runway-specific procedure.
The practical rule is simple: forecast with the TAF, verify with the METAR, and operate from the latest ATIS and ATC information. If those sources conflict, compare their station identifiers and timestamps first, then use the source that represents the operation you are actually flying.
