Learn how to cancel an IFR flight plan in the air, before take-off or after landing, with correct ATC wording, VMC limits and simulator steps.
To cancel an IFR flight plan, tell the ATC unit handling your flight, “Call sign, cancel IFR,” and wait for an explicit acknowledgement. Cancel airborne only in visual meteorological conditions when continuing VFR is legal; otherwise remain IFR and, after landing, ensure the responsible ATS unit receives your arrival report.
In real-world aviation, changing the transponder code, leaving the frequency or deleting a route from an app does not cancel an active IFR plan. The responsible air traffic service must receive and acknowledge either the cancellation or the arrival report.
What should I say to ATC to cancel IFR?
Tell the controller handling you that you want to cancel IFR, using your call sign and an unambiguous request.
- Confirm that you can continue VFR. You need suitable visual conditions, legal cloud clearance, adequate terrain clearance and permission to enter any airspace ahead. In the United States, airborne IFR cancellation must be outside Class A airspace and in VFR conditions.

IFR cancellation received, sometimes followed by traffic information, a frequency change or transponder instructions. Until you hear acknowledgement, assume the request was not received. - Continue under VFR. Follow any frequency and transponder instructions, then comply with the applicable VFR weather, altitude and airspace rules. Do not assume that one country’s VFR transponder code applies elsewhere.

When should I not cancel IFR in the air?
Do not cancel airborne unless the weather, airspace and terrain allow you to complete the flight legally and safely under VFR.
- Remain IFR in instrument meteorological conditions or when visual conditions ahead are doubtful.
- Do not cancel in Class A airspace where VFR flight is prohibited.
- Keep the clearance if cancelling would leave you unable to satisfy VFR airspace-entry requirements.
- Do not cancel merely because ATC asks you to report when cancellation is possible. The decision remains the pilot’s.
- Request an amended clearance—not cancellation—if you only need another route, altitude or approach.
Once ATC accepts the cancellation, IFR separation and the old clearance no longer protect the flight. If the weather deteriorates, request a new IFR clearance; the previous one is not restored automatically, and ATC may be unable to issue a replacement immediately. How do I close an IFR flight plan after landing?
At an airport without an operating control tower, make sure ATS receives an arrival report promptly after landing unless you cancelled IFR in the air.

This post-landing action is often called closing the flight plan rather than cancelling it. Failing to close an active plan can leave ATS uncertain about the aircraft’s status and may start overdue-aircraft alerting procedures.
Can I cancel an IFR flight plan before take-off?
You can cancel before departure by notifying clearance delivery, ground control or the ATS unit holding the flight plan.
If you have already received an IFR clearance but decide not to depart, state that you are cancelling the clearance and flight plan. If the plan was only filed and never activated, cancel it through the filing or ATS service used to submit it. For a delay rather than a cancelled flight, update the proposed departure details according to local procedures.
A route stored in an electronic flight bag, GPS or FMC is separate from the operational flight plan held by ATS. Deleting that route alone does not notify anyone.
How do I cancel IFR in a flight simulator?
In a flight simulator, cancel through the same ATC system that issued the IFR clearance, not through the aircraft’s GPS or FMC.
- Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024: Open the ATC panel while IFR service is active and choose the cancellation option. Its position can vary with the phase of flight; our instructions for operating the MSFS ATC panel cover the underlying controls.
- FSX and Prepar3D: Use the built-in ATC window and select the option to cancel IFR when it is offered.
- X-Plane and add-on ATC systems: Wording and menus vary, but the cancellation must be made within the ATC system providing the clearance.
- Online ATC: Tell the active controller by voice or text and wait for acknowledgement. Editing or removing the filed plan does not replace the radio call once ATC is handling the flight.
If an IFR route was loaded only into the aircraft’s GPS or FMC, built-in ATC may have no active IFR service to cancel. Conversely, cancelling through ATC usually does not erase the route from the avionics or disengage the autopilot.
