Cessna’s business jets are the Citation family. The modern line runs from the light M2 Gen2, CJ3 Gen2 and CJ4 Gen3 through the midsize Ascend and Latitude to the super-midsize Longitude. Published range spans roughly 1,550–3,500 nautical miles, while normal cruise fuel flow rises with cabin size and speed.
For Aviation & Real-World Flying, “available” needs qualification: some Citations are offered as factory-new aircraft, while many more remain available only on the pre-owned market. Which Cessna Citation jets are available new?
The modern factory-new Citation catalogue is built around six models, although orderability, certification transitions and delivery slots can vary by country and model year.

Speeds are maximum cruise figures, not the most economical cruise setting. Published range normally assumes standard conditions, a light passenger load and an IFR reserve; the exact payload and reserve footnotes differ by model. Ascend figures should also be checked against the approved documentation for the delivered aircraft.
The M2 and CJ series are certificated for single-pilot operation when the pilot and operation qualify. Ascend, Latitude and Longitude missions are normally planned around a two-pilot flight deck. Seating varies because a belted lavatory, side-facing seat or occupied co-pilot seat can change the advertised passenger total.
The Longitude is the longest-range modern Citation, but it is not simply a larger CJ4. It has a stand-up cabin, different engines, higher systems complexity and substantially greater fuel and runway requirements. How much fuel does a Cessna Citation burn?
A Citation typically burns about 600–850 lb of fuel per hour in an M2 and 1,500–2,000 lb per hour in a Longitude during stabilised high-altitude cruise. Intermediate Citations fall between those bands, but climb, aircraft weight, altitude and cruise speed can alter the result sharply.
At an approximate Jet A density of 6.7 lb per US gallon, 600 lb/h is about 90 US gal/h and 2,000 lb/h is about 300 US gal/h. Aircraft are loaded and performance-planned by fuel weight, however, because fuel density changes with temperature and fuel grade.
A mistake we see constantly is treating fuel capacity as though it were usable trip fuel. The following must also be allowed for:
- Taxi and APU fuel: consumed before take-off and not included in airborne cruise flow.
- Climb fuel: the engines burn more while climbing than during an efficient high-altitude cruise.
- Reserve fuel: contingency, approach, missed-approach, alternate and final-reserve requirements cannot be planned as normal trip fuel.
- Payload limits: filling the tanks may leave insufficient weight allowance for every passenger and bag.
- Weather: headwinds increase trip time and total fuel even when the hourly engine flow remains similar.
Fuel flow usually falls as the aircraft becomes lighter during cruise. A single gallons-per-hour number therefore works for rough comparisons, not dispatch planning.
Why is real Citation range shorter than published range?
Published Citation range is a controlled comparison figure, whereas dispatchable range depends on payload, runway limits, winds, temperature, routing and reserve policy. A jet advertised at 3,500 nm cannot necessarily fly every 3,500 nm city pair without a fuel stop.
Hot-and-high departures can force a choice between fuel and payload. Winter headwinds may make a westbound sector impractical even when the reverse flight works comfortably. Full passenger loads also reduce range where maximum take-off weight or maximum zero-fuel weight prevents carrying full tanks.
Pre-owned and discontinued Citation models
The pre-owned market contains a much wider Citation selection than the factory-new catalogue. These broad family figures show the main choices, but individual variants are not interchangeable.

Purchase price alone is a poor way to compare older Citations. Engine programmes, life-limited components, corrosion, avionics support and major inspection status can outweigh years of apparent fuel savings.
Which Cessna business jet is the best choice?
No Citation is best for every mission; the right model is the smallest aircraft that can carry the required payload over the real route with legal reserves and acceptable runway margins.
- M2 Gen2: choose it for short trips, lower fuel use and a small cabin when five or fewer passengers is normal.
- CJ3 Gen2: choose it when efficiency and range matter more than maximum light-jet speed.
- CJ4 Gen3: choose it for higher speed, more baggage and stronger payload capability while retaining the CJ format.
- Ascend: choose it for a larger, stand-up midsize cabin on predominantly regional missions; it is not intended to outrange the Latitude.
- Latitude: choose it when cabin comfort, a flat floor and roughly 2,700 nm of published range matter more than outright speed.
- Longitude: choose it for the longest Citation missions, a larger cabin and greater payload, accepting higher fuel use and two-pilot operating complexity.
- Pre-owned Mustang, XLS, Sovereign or Citation X: compare these when acquisition cost, cabin size or speed matters more than obtaining the newest generation.
Flight-simulator fuel planning
A simulated Citation only reproduces these figures if the add-on models the correct variant, engine and performance schedule. Older CJ4 simulations, for example, should not be expected to match CJ4 Gen3 specifications.
