The Cessna Citation Mustang is a pressurised, twin-turbofan Model 510 very light jet, certified for single-pilot operation and normally arranged for four cabin passengers. What is the Cessna Citation Mustang?

The Model 510 Mustang was Cessna's smallest production Citation and brought familiar business-jet features to the very light jet market. Deliveries began in 2006, and production concluded in 2017.

It has an aluminium airframe, low wing, T-tail and two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW615F-A turbofans mounted on the rear fuselage. The Mustang's roughly 3,100-foot published take-off field length under baseline conditions supports operations from relatively small airports. That figure must not be treated as a universal minimum: temperature, elevation, runway slope, surface condition, obstacles, wind, weight and regulatory margins can increase the required distance substantially.

Which very light jet best fits each mission?

The right choice depends more on payload, cabin needs and trip length than on maximum cruise speed alone.

  • Choose the Mustang for one to four travellers on short-to-medium sectors when a conventional twin-jet layout, Garmin cockpit and access to smaller airports matter more than maximum cabin size.
  • Consider the Eclipse when minimum airframe size and efficiency are priorities, after checking model-specific support, modifications and maintenance history carefully.
  • Choose a Phenom 100 or HondaJet when passengers need more cabin comfort, greater speed or more baggage and payload flexibility. The trade-off is a larger and usually more expensive aircraft to acquire and operate.
  • Consider the Vision Jet when single-engine operation, cabin design and its parachute system are central requirements. It is not a like-for-like twin-engine substitute and has a lower maximum operating altitude.
  • Step up to the Citation M2 when the Mustang's payload and range margins are regularly too tight. It belongs to the larger CitationJet line rather than the original VLJ niche.

What are the Mustang's practical limitations?

The main limitations are payload with full fuel, a compact cabin and the need to evaluate an ageing individual airframe rather than relying on the model's reputation alone.

  • Full fuel does not mean full seats. Four adults and their bags may require less fuel, a fuel stop or fewer occupants. A weight-and-balance calculation and the approved performance data settle the question.
  • Published range is not dispatch range. Headwinds, reserves, alternate requirements, climb, descent and temperature can remove hundreds of nautical miles from a theoretical maximum.
  • The cabin is genuinely small. The club seating works well for short trips, but headroom and movement are limited. Its toilet provision is closer to an emergency arrangement than the private lavatory found in some larger rivals.
  • Not every G1000 installation is equivalent. The original Mustang panel should not be assumed to have later G1000 NXi functions. Buyers must verify the installed avionics, approved upgrades and database arrangements by aircraft.
  • Used-aircraft condition dominates value. Engine programme status, inspection history, corrosion, damage history, life-limited components and deferred defects can matter more than the purchase price difference between two airframes.

How should the Citation Mustang feel in a flight simulator?

A good Mustang simulation should feel like a compact, relatively light business jet rather than a scaled-down airliner or a faster CitationJet. Weight-dependent V-speeds, rapid acceleration at low weight, pressurisation, anti-ice operation and FADEC-managed engines are more important to the experience than headline range.
