How do I operate a Cessna radio stack?

Operate the stack in the order of power, audio selection, frequency tuning and instrument-source selection.

  1. Power the aircraft and avionics. Turn on the battery or master switch, then the avionics master where fitted. During a normal cold start, the avionics are usually left off until the engine is running. If the entire stack remains black, check the buses, alternator and circuit breakers using our explanation of Cessna electrical and avionics power.
  2. Configure the audio panel. Select the COM receiver you want to hear and the COM microphone you intend to transmit through. NAV1, NAV2 and marker buttons normally control identification audio rather than flight guidance.
  3. Tune the communication frequency. On an active/standby radio, enter the frequency in the standby window using the large and small knobs, then press the transfer button. Older direct-tune units have no transfer step. A mistake we see constantly is leaving the correct frequency in standby.
  4. Check the transmit path. Confirm that the audio panel microphone selector matches the radio containing the active frequency. In a simulator using voice communication, the push-to-talk control must also be assigned and pressed.
  5. Set the navigation radio. Tune the VOR or ILS frequency, transfer it to active and listen to the identifier when the simulator models it. Select NAV1, NAV2 or VLOC as the instrument source; merely tuning a frequency does not switch a GPS-driven CDI to radio guidance.
  6. Set the transponder. Enter the assigned code using digits 0 through 7 only, then select the required mode. Altitude or ALT mode reports pressure altitude on equipment that models Mode C. Do not use emergency codes unless the scenario or controller calls for one.
  7. Cross-check before relying on it. Read back the active frequency, verify the station identifier, confirm the displayed CDI source and check that the expected needle or flag responds.

Should I use COM1 or COM2?

COM1 is conventionally used for the primary ATC frequency, while COM2 monitors ATIS or the next frequency, but either radio can perform either job.

Most audio panels can receive both radios at once while transmitting on only one. If you hear a station but receive no reply, check the microphone selector rather than retuning immediately. Monitoring two busy channels can become confusing. Use one for the active conversation and keep the other at low volume for weather or the next controller.

How do I switch between GPS and NAV radio guidance?

Use the GPS unit's CDI button or the panel's source selector until the instrument annunciation shows VLOC, NAV1 or NAV2 instead of GPS.

A centred CDI while GPS is displayed does not confirm that the tuned VOR or localiser is being received. Some navigators can switch automatically during an ILS procedure, but confirm the source annunciation rather than assuming they have done so. Why is my Cessna radio stack not working?

Most simulated radio-stack faults are caused by power, active/standby confusion, audio routing or the wrong navigation source rather than a failed radio.

  • All displays are blank: check the battery, avionics master, relevant circuit breakers and any simulated equipment failures. The battery can power radios briefly without the alternator, but it will discharge.
  • The exact COM frequency cannot be selected: check the simulator's 25 kHz or 8.33 kHz channel-spacing option and make sure you are turning the inner frequency knob. Hardware panels may need matching spacing settings.
  • The frequency is correct but there is no sound: move it from standby to active, select that receiver on the audio panel, raise its volume and check the simulator's communications audio output.
  • ATC can be heard but cannot hear you: select the matching COM microphone, verify the active frequency and test the push-to-talk binding. Duplicate controller assignments can cause a button press to operate the wrong function.
  • The CDI or HSI does not move: select the correct NAV receiver or VLOC source, confirm the station identifier and consider range and terrain. VOR reception is line-of-sight, so a valid frequency may still provide no usable signal.
  • The localiser works but the glideslope does not: the procedure may be localiser-only, the aircraft may be outside the glideslope coverage, or it may already be above the beam. Do not chase an unverified indication.
  • The transponder code is rejected: transponder codes cannot contain 8 or 9. Also check that the unit is not left in standby when altitude reporting is required.

Does every simulated Cessna use the same radio stack?

No. An older Cessna 152 may have direct-tune radios and a separate transponder, while a later Cessna 172 may use an integrated GPS/NAV/COM unit or a glass cockpit.

The underlying workflow remains the same, but knob functions, audio controls and source annunciations differ. Simulator assistance can also tune or swap radios automatically, so disable that behaviour if you want to practise the complete manual procedure. In a real aircraft, use the installed equipment manual, aircraft checklist and instructor guidance rather than assuming the simulator's implementation is exact.
