What do cockpit switch markings mean in a cold-and-dark start?

In aviation and real-world flying, cockpit switch markings during a cold-and-dark start show either a commanded position—OFF, ON, AUTO, ARM or START—or system status such as AVAIL, OPEN, FAULT or IN USE. Read printed labels and illuminated legends separately: one selects an action; the other usually confirms availability, operation or a problem.

How should you read a cockpit switch?

Read each control in three layers rather than treating every visible word as an instruction.

  1. Identify the system. A panel label such as BAT, EXT PWR, FUEL PUMP or APU tells you what the control affects.
  2. Read the selected position. Engraved words around a toggle or rotary selector—OFF, ON, AUTO, NAV or START—show the command being made. A pointer or painted index line shows the selected detent.
  3. Read the illuminated legend. AVAIL, FAULT, OPEN or ON inside an annunciator normally reports a condition. It may confirm the command, show that a source is ready, or warn that the requested state was not achieved.

The distinction matters. A switch can be physically ON while its associated valve remains CLOSED, or external power can show AVAIL without actually powering the aircraft.

What do common cockpit switch markings mean?

The international symbols I and O normally mean on and off. Aircraft-specific wording and procedures take precedence whenever the panel uses a different convention.

Does a dark indicator mean the system is off?

No. In a genuinely cold-and-dark cockpit, an indicator can be dark simply because its electrical bus has no power.

Before connecting the battery, ground power or APU generator, use the physical switch positions to establish the initial configuration. After power is available, check annunciators, system pages and gauges. Perform a lamp test only when the aircraft procedure provides one; a failed or heavily dimmed lamp can otherwise hide a valid condition.

A common example is external power. AVAIL usually means the source has acceptable voltage and frequency, while ON means it has been selected or connected. Likewise, APU AVAIL normally means the APU is ready to support aircraft services, not that its generator and bleed air are automatically supplying them.

Does an illuminated marking mean I should press it?

No. An illuminated legend reports status; it is not a universal prompt to press the switch.

An amber FAULT light may require a checklist action, isolation or no immediate action at all. A white OFF light can identify a deliberately deselected system, while AVAIL may be the expected cue for the next checklist step. Press controls only when the checklist calls for that action and the required conditions have been met.

Do Airbus, Boeing and light aircraft use the same conventions?

No single colour or “lights out” rule applies to every cockpit, so use the aircraft documentation rather than transferring assumptions between types.

  • Light aircraft: Mechanical toggle and rotary positions are often the main indication, with separate warning lamps for low voltage, oil pressure or other faults.   • Airbus: Many overhead panels use a lights-out philosophy for the normal configuration. Blue commonly indicates a temporarily selected function, green shows normal operation or availability, amber indicates a fault or caution, and white often identifies a switch position such as OFF.   • Boeing and other transport aircraft: Split annunciators, blue advisory lights and amber abnormal-condition lights are common, but their meaning varies by aircraft generation and system. A dark panel generally means no unwanted caution lights, not that every indicator must be extinguished during start-up.

What should you check when the indication does not match?

If the commanded position and system indication disagree, stop advancing the start until you understand why.

  1. Confirm electrical power. Check the battery, external source, generator, bus ties and relevant circuit protection.
  2. Separate command from feedback. Verify the physical switch position, then check the valve, contactor, pressure, voltage or system-page indication.
  3. Check prerequisites. A valve may need pressure, a generator may need stable engine speed, and a starter may be inhibited until another system is configured.
  4. Allow for transition time. OPEN or CLOSED legends may flash while an actuator is moving, and turbine systems do not always respond instantly.
  5. Use the aircraft checklist. Do not repeatedly reset a fault or circuit breaker without knowing the cause.

In a flight simulator, a switch that snaps back or changes by itself often has a duplicate controller binding, automated assistance or a saved panel state overriding it. Disconnect the suspect controller temporarily, clear duplicate assignments and reload a known aircraft state before assuming the simulated system is faulty.
