In real-world US aviation, during an FAA commercial pilot checkride, an examiner verifies your eligibility, conducts a scenario-based ground discussion, then evaluates your flying against the Commercial Pilot Airman Certification Standards. You must demonstrate commercial-level accuracy, aircraft control, judgement and risk management. A pass normally ends with a temporary commercial pilot certificate.

“Checkride” is the usual US term for the FAA practical test. Other aviation authorities use terms such as commercial pilot skills test or flight test, with different requirements and tolerances.

What are the stages of the commercial checkride?

The test has three main phases, although the ground and flight portions may be integrated around one practical scenario.

The examiner may be an FAA inspector or a designated pilot examiner. Before starting, the examiner should explain the test procedure, transfer-of-controls convention, possible outcomes and what happens if the test must be discontinued.

There is no blanket requirement to take the single-engine commercial checkride in a retractable-gear aeroplane. The aircraft must be airworthy, appropriate to the category and class sought, and capable of performing the required tasks. Training requirements involving a complex aeroplane, turbine aeroplane or technically advanced aeroplane are a separate eligibility matter.

What does the examiner ask during the oral exam?

The oral portion tests whether you can apply aviation knowledge to a realistic commercial flight, not merely recite definitions.

  • Airworthiness, inspections, maintenance records and inoperative equipment
  • Weather interpretation, forecasts and go/no-go decisions
  • Cross-country planning, airspace, navigation and fuel requirements
  • Weight and balance, take-off and landing performance, and aircraft limitations
  • Aircraft systems, abnormal indications and emergency procedures
  • Aeromedical factors, risk management and aeronautical decision-making
  • Commercial pilot privileges, limitations and operational regulations

A frequent trap is assuming that a commercial certificate permits any paid flying. It allows you to act as pilot in command for compensation or hire when the operation is otherwise legal; it does not by itself authorise you to advertise charter flights or conduct an operation requiring an operating certificate. The distinction is part of the broader difference between private and commercial pilot privileges.

You may normally consult suitable reference material for a detail that a working pilot would reasonably verify. Constantly searching for basic limitations, regulations or aircraft procedures, however, can demonstrate inadequate knowledge. Know where information comes from and be able to apply it.

What manoeuvres are flown on a commercial pilot checkride?

The precise flight profile depends on the category, class, aircraft and examiner’s plan of action, but every required task is judged against the applicable Commercial Pilot ACS.

A typical commercial airplane single-engine land test covers:

  • Pre-flight inspection, cockpit management, engine starting and taxiing
  • Airport operations, radio communication and runway-incursion avoidance
  • Normal, crosswind, short-field and soft-field take-offs and landings
  • A power-off 180-degree accuracy approach and landing
  • Steep turns, steep spirals, chandelles, lazy eights and eights on pylons
  • Slow flight, stalls and recovery from unusual attitudes
  • Pilotage, dead reckoning, navigation systems, diversion and lost procedures
  • Simulated emergencies, systems malfunctions and an emergency descent
  • Basic flight by reference to instruments
  • After-landing, parking and securing procedures

The test is not necessarily flown in that order. It may begin with part of a planned cross-country flight before the examiner introduces a diversion, weather change, equipment problem or passenger-related decision.

A multiengine commercial test uses the relevant multiengine ACS tasks, including engine-out recognition and control, one-engine-inoperative performance, systems knowledge and minimum-control-speed considerations. Do not prepare from a single-engine checklist and assume the profiles are interchangeable.

What causes a commercial checkride failure?

An unsatisfactory result follows when performance fails to meet the ACS, the outcome of a task is seriously in doubt, or the examiner must intervene to maintain safety.

Common causes include:

  • Exceeding a task’s tolerances without recognising and correcting the deviation
  • Continuing an unstable approach instead of going around
  • Poor clearing, traffic awareness or collision avoidance
  • Using memorised manoeuvre inputs without correcting for wind
  • Losing situational awareness while fixating on altitude, airspeed or a touchdown point
  • Misunderstanding aircraft limitations, airworthiness or commercial operating privileges
  • Skipping checklist items or mishandling a simulated emergency

A momentary deviation is not always an automatic failure if it is promptly recognised and corrected safely; the examiner evaluates the complete ACS standard. Conversely, finishing inside a numerical tolerance does not rescue unsafe judgement or poor risk management.

Examiners do not expect silent perfection. State relevant decisions, especially when rejecting a take-off, going around, changing the plan or responding to an abnormal condition. Do not narrate every control movement so heavily that it distracts from flying.

What happens after a pass, failure or discontinuance?

The paperwork depends on whether the test was completed satisfactorily, failed, or stopped for reasons unrelated to your performance.

When a failed or discontinued test is completed within 60 calendar days, satisfactory areas can normally receive credit, although an examiner may reevaluate a task when necessary. After that period, the entire practical test must be repeated. Continuing after one failed task may reduce the work required on the retest, provided both applicant and examiner agree to continue.

How should you prepare for the checkride?

Prepare from the current Commercial Pilot ACS for the exact category and class sought, then connect every task to your aircraft’s procedures, limitations and performance data.

  1. Audit the paperwork. Check the application, endorsements, logged experience, knowledge-test report and aircraft records before checkride day.
  2. Practise scenario-based decisions. Be ready to explain why the flight is legal, safe and commercially permissible—not simply how to calculate it.
  3. Fly to tighter standards than the minimum. Leave room for wind, turbulence, traffic and examiner-created workload.
  4. Use the real aircraft documents. Know how to find limitations, performance figures, equipment requirements and emergency procedures.
  5. Run a complete mock test. Include the oral evaluation, pre-flight planning, manoeuvres, landings and realistic distractions without coaching between tasks.
