What should I expect on an FAA private pilot checkride?

On an FAA private pilot checkride, expect an eligibility and aircraft-document review, an oral examination based on the Airman Certification Standards, then a flight covering planning, aircraft control, navigation, stalls, landings, emergencies and judgement. Passing both portions earns a temporary private pilot certificate; inability to apply knowledge or an unsafe decision can cause failure.

How is an FAA private pilot checkride structured?

The checkride is one practical test with ground and flight portions, not two unrelated examinations. The examiner normally builds both around a realistic flight scenario rather than following a predictable list of questions and manoeuvres.

The exact order and duration vary with the examiner, aeroplane, traffic, weather and scenario. Allow plenty of time rather than arranging another commitment immediately afterwards. What do I need to bring to the checkride?

You need evidence that both you and the aeroplane are eligible for the test. Confirm the examiner’s document list in advance, because a missing endorsement or expired inspection can prevent the checkride from starting.

  • Government-issued photo identification.
  • Your student pilot certificate and the medical qualification required for the flight.
  • Your original knowledge-test report.
  • Your logbook with the required aeronautical experience and instructor endorsements, including confirmation that identified knowledge-test deficiencies were reviewed.
  • A completed practical-test application through the method agreed with the examiner.
  • The assigned cross-country plan, if one was provided, with weather, fuel, performance, weight-and-balance and risk calculations.
  • Aircraft registration, airworthiness certificate, operating limitations and current weight-and-balance information.
  • Maintenance records showing compliance with the inspections and airworthiness requirements applicable to that aircraft and operation.
  • Any equipment, examiner fee arrangements or aircraft-rental paperwork agreed beforehand.

A mistake we see constantly is assuming the flight school has checked every record. Staff may prepare the maintenance logs, but the applicant must still be able to locate the relevant evidence and explain why the aeroplane is airworthy. If your eligibility is not yet clear, check the certificates, endorsements and practical-test prerequisites required before the test.

What happens during the oral examination?

The oral examination tests whether you can use your knowledge to make a safe flight, not merely recite definitions. Expect the examiner to alter the scenario and ask what you would do, why you would do it and where you would verify uncertain information.

Typical subjects include:

  • pilot privileges, limitations, currency and required documents;
  • aircraft airworthiness, systems, limitations and equipment;
  • weather reports, forecasts and go/no-go decisions;
  • airspace, chart symbols, communications and operating rules;
  • cross-country planning, fuel reserves, diversions and lost procedures;
  • weight and balance, take-off and landing performance, and density altitude;
  • aeromedical factors, risk management and emergency decisions;
  • subjects associated with incorrect answers on your knowledge test.

You may use appropriate references when the situation calls for them, but repeatedly searching for basic information suggests that you do not understand it. If you genuinely do not know an answer, say how you would find an authoritative answer instead of guessing. The examiner may then probe further to establish whether the gap is minor or affects safety.

Know your own aeroplane rather than giving a generic textbook answer. Be ready to explain its fuel system, electrical system, operating limitations, emergency procedures and the performance figures used for the planned flight.

What happens during the flight test?

The flight portion assesses control, procedures, situational awareness and aeronautical decision-making under the applicable ACS. For a typical private pilot single-engine aeroplane test, expect a selection of these tasks:

  • pre-flight inspection, cockpit preparation, passenger briefing, engine start, taxi and run-up;
  • radio work, runway-incursion avoidance and airport operations;
  • normal, crosswind, short-field or soft-field take-offs and landings, plus a go-around;
  • pilotage, dead reckoning, electronic navigation, diversion and lost procedures;
  • steep turns, ground-reference manoeuvres, slow flight and stalls;
  • basic flight by reference to instruments and unusual-attitude recovery;
  • a simulated engine failure and other aircraft-specific emergencies;
  • checklist use, collision avoidance and post-flight procedures.

The examiner need not announce every task by its ACS name. A request to divert, deal with deteriorating weather or choose another runway may assess several skills at once. Some oral questioning also continues in the cockpit.

Common checkride failure points

  • Continuing an unstable approach: a safe go-around usually demonstrates better judgement than forcing the aeroplane onto the runway.
  • Fixating inside the cockpit: charts and displays are useful, but they do not replace traffic scanning, clearing turns and position awareness.
  • Using checklists mechanically: understand what each item does, verify the result and avoid losing control while reading.
  • Ignoring an early deviation: notice heading, altitude or airspeed changes and correct them promptly before they grow.
  • Treating emergencies as memory drills: maintain control, establish the appropriate configuration, select a viable landing area and use the checklist without neglecting lookout or communication.
  • Waiting for examiner coaching: the examiner can clarify an instruction but cannot teach you through a task.

A home simulator is useful for rehearsing flows, navigation, radio calls and instrument scans, but it cannot reproduce control feel, landing sight picture or physical workload. We explain which flying skills can be practised effectively at home and which require the real aeroplane.

How the ACS is applied

The examiner judges each task against the applicable Airman Certification Standards, including knowledge, risk management and flying skill. Perfection is not required: a small deviation that you recognise and correct may be acceptable, while persistent deviations, unsafe actions, poor judgement or repeated prompting are not.

One unsatisfactory task can make the practical test unsatisfactory. Do not try to hide an error. State what has happened, correct it safely and continue unless the examiner directs otherwise.

Agree before departure who will act as pilot in command and how control will be exchanged. The examiner does not automatically take responsibility for traffic, navigation or aircraft control; use a clear positive exchange such as “your controls” and “my controls”. Examiner intervention needed to prevent an unsafe situation is a serious failure indicator.

Pass, discontinuance and failure

The checkride can end in three different ways, and a discontinuance is not the same as a failure.

If an unsatisfactory task has already occurred, stopping for weather or another reason does not erase it. On a retest, the examiner concentrates on failed or incomplete areas but may reassess previously satisfactory work when necessary to determine competence.
