Concorde is often given that title because it was the only supersonic airliner to sustain internationally recognised scheduled passenger operations for decades. Its service career spanned 1976 to 2003, while the Tu-144 carried scheduled passengers for only a few months.
Concorde could cruise efficiently at around Mach 2 without keeping its reheats lit continuously. Reheat was used for take-off and transonic acceleration, then switched off for cruise. What passenger-flight speed record did Concorde hold?
Concorde’s best-known record was the fastest New York-to-London crossing by a passenger airliner. On 7 February 1996, a British Airways Concorde flew from JFK to Heathrow in 2 hours, 52 minutes and 59 seconds.
That was a route record, not evidence that Concorde had the highest maximum speed of every passenger aircraft. The more accurate description is that Concorde was the fastest airliner to maintain long-term scheduled supersonic passenger service.
Do faster military jets or spaceplanes count?
No—faster military aircraft are not passenger airliners.
