Did Concorde ever fly the route in under three hours?

Yes. On 7 February 1996, a British Airways Concorde completed the JFK-to-Heathrow crossing in 2 hours 52 minutes 59 seconds, setting the recognised passenger-aircraft record for the route.

That was an exceptional airborne crossing rather than the normal scheduled duration. Favourable winds, routing and operating conditions helped produce the record, so it should not be treated as a representative journey time.

Why do published Concorde flight times differ?

Different figures often measure different parts of the trip. An airborne time runs from take-off to landing, whereas block time includes taxiing after leaving the gate and again after landing.

  • Atlantic winds: prevailing westerly winds generally favoured the eastbound New York-to-London crossing.
  • Air traffic routing: the approved track and any vectors around the airports changed the distance flown.
  • Supersonic limits: Concorde could not accelerate to Mach 2 immediately after leaving JFK or remain supersonic all the way to Heathrow.
  • Local clock times: New York and London are normally five hours apart, but their daylight-saving changeovers do not always occur on the same dates. Comparing local departure and arrival times without converting them to UTC can therefore be misleading.

How long should a simulated Concorde flight take?

At normal simulation speed, allow roughly three and a half hours from take-off to landing for a plausible JFK–Heathrow Concorde flight, plus whatever time you need for cockpit preparation and taxiing. Weather, routing and the fidelity of the aircraft model will affect the result.

Fly the initial segment subsonically, accelerate only after reaching the oceanic portion, then begin deceleration before the British coast.
