Configure Steam Deck controls for Microsoft Flight Simulator in two layers: use Steam Input to present the Deck as a standard gamepad, then create a custom controller profile inside MSFS. Keep flight axes as analogue gamepad inputs, map a trackpad as a mouse, and remove duplicate bindings before adjusting sensitivity.
This method applies to MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024, although their menus and profile systems differ. A SteamOS setup assumes the Steam release is launched through Steam; Windows installations and streamed sessions may expose the controller differently. Should I configure controls in Steam Input or MSFS?
Use both, but give each layer a separate job: Steam Input translates the Deck hardware, while Microsoft Flight Simulator assigns that virtual controller to aircraft functions.
Set up the Steam Input layout
- Open the per-game controller layout from the MSFS page in Steam before launching the simulator. Do not edit the Deck's desktop layout by mistake.
- Start with a gamepad template. Use the official layout if one is available and suitable; otherwise choose a standard gamepad template such as
Gamepad with Joystick Trackpad. Avoid community layouts until the basic controls work. - Keep both sticks as joystick inputs. Do not make the left stick send WASD or directional-pad presses, because those are digital commands rather than proportional flight controls.
- Set the right trackpad as a mouse. Map its click to the primary mouse button. An unused trackpad or swipe action can send mouse-wheel input for turning cockpit knobs.
- Use rear grips for deliberate shortcuts. Steam Input may need to make these send keyboard commands because they are not always exposed as additional gamepad buttons.
Build the in-game controller profile
- Launch MSFS and open its controls page. Select the detected Xbox-compatible or virtual gamepad, not the keyboard profile.
- Create a custom profile by duplicating the default preset or creating a new preset, depending on the simulator version.
- Bind one control at a time. Assign the left stick to the aileron and elevator axis commands, then confirm that the on-screen input indicator moves smoothly through its full range.
- Check every conflict warning. Clear unwanted duplicate assignments, especially camera commands or keyboard inputs generated by Steam Input.
- Test before adding shortcuts. Confirm pitch, roll, rudder, brakes, throttle and camera control in a simple parked flight before mapping secondary systems.
Which Steam Deck controls should I bind?
The best starting point is an Xbox-style layout with the trackpads and rear grips used for functions that a normal gamepad cannot handle comfortably.

The Deck has no dedicated throttle lever. For rear buttons or face buttons, bind Increase Throttle and Decrease Throttle, not a throttle axis that expects a continuous analogue value. How should I tune Steam Deck sensitivity?
Begin with the simulator's default response and add only enough dead zone to stop unwanted movement when the sticks are centred.
- Increase the dead zone in small steps if the aircraft drifts or the cockpit yoke trembles without input.
- Soften pitch and roll near the centre if the short stick travel makes small corrections too abrupt.
- Keep the full outer range so that maximum stick movement still produces full control deflection.
- Adjust curves in MSFS rather than heavily modifying both Steam Input and MSFS at the same time. Two layers of curve processing make faults difficult to diagnose.

Why are Steam Deck controls not working in MSFS?
Most Steam Deck control failures come from the wrong Steam Input template, digital commands assigned to axes, or the same physical input being translated twice.
- MSFS does not show a controller: enable Steam Input for the game, restore a standard gamepad template and restart the simulator. Changing controller modes while MSFS is open may not refresh the device list correctly.
- The stick gives full deflection immediately: Steam Input is probably sending keyboard or directional-pad commands. Change it to joystick output and bind it to an MSFS command containing the word Axis.
- The aircraft moves twice or a view changes unexpectedly: search the in-game assignments by input and remove duplicates. Also check whether a rear grip sends a keyboard shortcut already attached to another function.
- The throttle jumps between idle and full power: a button has been assigned to an axis or a fixed throttle position. Use increase/decrease commands for buttons.
- The trackpad moves a pointer but cannot turn knobs: confirm that trackpad click sends the primary mouse button and provide a mouse-wheel action for rotary controls.
- Controls change when a grip button is held: the Steam layout probably contains an action layer or mode shift. Remove it unless that secondary control layer was intentional.
MSFS 2020 and 2024 control profile differences
The two simulators use the same Steam Input principles, but their profiles should be treated as separate configurations. Command names, filters and profile controls can differ, and a working MSFS 2020 preset should not be assumed to transfer directly into MSFS 2024.
Keep one dependable general-aircraft profile in each simulator, then make variants only when an aircraft genuinely needs different controls, such as helicopter collective input, airliner throttle detents or separate engine controls.
