Learn how to configure taxi steering in FSX: assign rudder and toe brakes, remove duplicate axes, fix reversed pedals and handle add-on tillers.
In FSX and FSX: Steam Edition, taxi steering is normally controlled by the rudder input, which also turns a steerable nosewheel or tailwheel. Assign one device to Rudder Axis, remove duplicate assignments, add toe-brake axes if fitted, then calibrate sensitivity, null zones and brake direction before taxiing.
How do I assign taxi steering controls in FSX?
Assign Rudder Axis to the pedals, joystick twist grip or other analogue control you want to use; FSX has no separate universal tiller axis for its default aircraft.
- Connect the controller before starting FSX. This helps the simulator detect it and retain the correct assignments.
- Open the Controls settings. During a flight, press Alt if the menu bar is hidden, then use Options > Settings > Controls. Confirm that controllers are enabled.
- Check every connected device. On the Control Axes tab, select each controller in turn and remove unwanted Rudder Axis assignments. FSX often assigns axes automatically, so a joystick twist grip and pedals may both be steering at once.
- Assign the intended steering axis. Choose Rudder Axis, start the assignment process and move the pedals or twist grip through its range.
- Set sensitivity and the null zone. Begin with high or full rudder sensitivity so the hardware can reach full travel, plus a small null zone to prevent drift around the centre. Increase the null zone only enough to stop unwanted movement.
- Configure toe brakes separately. Assign the left and right pedal axes to Left Brake Axis and Right Brake Axis. Test each side independently and select Reverse for an axis only if releasing that pedal applies the brake.
- Test with a default aircraft. Use a default Cessna on a wide taxiway in calm conditions. Release the parking brake, apply minimal power and check rudder movement, nosewheel response and each brake separately.

How can I steer in FSX without rudder pedals?
A joystick twist axis is the best substitute for pedals because it provides proportional steering rather than an abrupt left-or-right command.

Autorudder, found in FSX's realism settings, generates rudder input from roll commands. It makes default aircraft manageable without a rudder axis, but it is less precise than pedals or a twist grip and should normally be disabled once proper rudder hardware is configured.
Why is FSX taxi steering not working correctly?
Incorrect FSX taxi steering is usually caused by duplicated axes, reversed toe brakes, controller drift or an aircraft that uses custom or castoring-wheel logic.
- The aircraft weaves or snaps left and right: check every controller for duplicate Rudder Axis assignments. Also confirm that a throttle slider or gamepad stick has not been assigned automatically.

- The rudder moves but the nosewheel does not: test the same hardware with a default Cessna. If that works, the original aircraft probably has a custom tiller, limited steering angle or a free-castoring wheel.

- The turn is too wide: slow to walking pace before a tight corner and use light differential braking. More rudder sensitivity cannot exceed the steering angle built into the aircraft.
Do FSX add-on aircraft need a separate tiller?
Some complex add-on airliners use a custom tiller assignment, but FSX's default aircraft normally steer through Rudder Axis.
Check the add-on's supplied control documentation or configuration panel for a tiller command, steering axis or option that links the tiller to the rudder pedals. Do not assign a random FSX axis merely because the default rudder assignment has no effect; that can interfere with another system.
Taildraggers are another special case. A free-castoring tailwheel may require differential braking and a small burst of power, while a lockable tailwheel may need to be centred or unlocked before a tight turn. That behaviour belongs to the aircraft model rather than the controller settings.
How can I make FSX taxi steering less sensitive?
Taxi more slowly first, then use a small controller null zone and smooth analogue input rather than cutting rudder sensitivity drastically.
A large null zone delays the initial response and can make the aircraft jump into a turn once the input finally registers. Reducing sensitivity too far can also prevent full rudder travel during take-off or landing.
