Yes. FSX and FSX: Steam Edition can use any gamepad that Windows exposes as a game controller. Connect it before starting FSX, enable the device, assign the left stick to aileron and elevator axes, map the remaining flight controls, then calibrate the sticks and remove any duplicate default assignments.
How do I configure a gamepad in FSX?
Set up the analogue axes first, remove conflicting assignments, and only then map buttons. FSX sometimes creates unsuitable defaults, so accepting every automatic assignment is a mistake we see frequently.
- Check the controller in Windows. Connect the gamepad before opening FSX. Press Windows key and R, enter
joy.cpl, select the controller and confirm that its sticks and buttons respond. If Windows cannot see the device, FSX will not see it either. - Open the FSX controls menu. Go to Settings, select Controls and make sure controllers are enabled. Choose the gamepad from the controller-type list rather than editing another connected device.
- Remove unwanted defaults. Inspect both the axis and button assignments. Delete duplicate pitch, roll, yaw and throttle bindings, especially if a joystick, steering wheel or virtual controller is also listed.
- Assign the flight axes. Map the left stick horizontally to Ailerons Axis and vertically to Elevator Axis. Select the command, choose the assignment option, move only the intended stick and then confirm it.
- Check axis direction. Move the stick right and verify that the cockpit yoke moves right; pull back and verify that it moves back. Enable the axis reversal option if either direction is wrong. Elevator assignments are commonly reversed.
- Map essential buttons. Assign throttle, rudder or autorudder, brakes, elevator trim, flaps, landing gear and view controls. Leave rarely used systems on the keyboard rather than creating hard-to-remember button combinations.
- Calibrate and test. Use the FSX calibration controls, then load a simple aircraft in calm weather. Check full control travel, hands-off drift and every mapped button before attempting a normal flight.

What is a practical FSX gamepad layout?
A useful layout keeps pitch, roll, trim and braking immediately accessible. The exact button names depend on the controller, but this is a sensible starting point:

What sensitivity and null-zone settings should I use?
Start with high axis sensitivity and a small null zone, then adjust only after testing the aircraft. High sensitivity preserves full control travel, while a modest null zone prevents an ageing or poorly centred thumbstick from commanding constant pitch or roll.
- Increase the null zone only until the aircraft stops responding to stick drift.
- Keep aileron and elevator sensitivity high enough to reach full control deflection.
- Make small changes and test them in the same aircraft and weather conditions.
- Do not use a large null zone to cure over-controlling; it creates a dead centre followed by an abrupt response.

Why is my gamepad not working correctly in FSX?
Most FSX gamepad faults come from Windows detection, duplicate bindings or an input translation layer rather than the aircraft itself.
The controller does not appear
Close FSX, reconnect the gamepad and verify it with joy.cpl before restarting the simulator. FSX does not always handle controllers connected after launch reliably. A wired connection can also help identify whether Bluetooth or wireless pairing is the cause.
The aircraft moves without touching the stick
Recalibrate the controller and increase the relevant null zone slightly. Also check every connected device for duplicate axes; an unused throttle, wheel, virtual controller or second gamepad can send continuous input.
The controls move in the wrong direction
Enable the reverse option for that individual axis. Do not compensate by assigning a different axis because this often creates another conflict.
Buttons work, but the triggers do not
The triggers may be presented to FSX as a combined axis rather than two independent controls. Use digital throttle commands, another available axis or a compatible per-game controller mapping instead.
FSX: Steam Edition produces double inputs
Steam Input can create a translated or virtual controller while FSX also reads the physical device. Use one input route only: if FSX recognises the physical gamepad correctly, disable per-game Steam Input translation and remove any assignments belonging to the duplicate device.
Can any Windows gamepad work with FSX?
Any pad that appears as a functioning Windows game controller can potentially work, but FSX is a DirectInput-era simulator and does not guarantee ideal mappings for every modern device. Xbox-style controllers are usually straightforward; PlayStation-style and generic pads may expose different button numbers, combined triggers or no meaningful button labels.
A gamepad is adequate for casual flying, external views and many airliners, but its short stick travel limits fine control during hand-flown approaches. If pitch and roll remain abrupt after calibration and trimming, the hardware limitation—not another FSX setting—is usually the deciding factor.
