Yes. FSX and FSX: Steam Edition can use a steering wheel if Windows recognises it as a game controller. Assign the wheel and pedals manually under Controls. It can handle taxi steering or basic flying, but a racing wheel lacks a centred pitch axis, so a joystick or yoke is usually better.
How do I set up a steering wheel in FSX?
Set up the wheel as a normal Windows game controller, then assign each axis manually in FSX.
- Connect the wheel before starting FSX. Open the Windows Game Controllers panel and confirm that the wheel, pedals and buttons respond. FSX cannot use an input that Windows does not detect.
- Open the FSX Controls menu. From the main screen, open Settings and then Controls; during a flight, use the Options and Settings menus. - Delete unwanted automatic assignments. Check both the axis and button pages. FSX may assign a generic wheel axis to several unrelated flight controls, causing the aircraft to turn, bank or apply power without being commanded.
- Assign one function to each axis. Select the required FSX control, change its assignment and move only the wheel or pedal you intend to use. Do not leave the same physical axis assigned to both ailerons and rudder.
- Calibrate and centre the controls. Calibrate in Windows first, then adjust sensitivity, null zones and reversal in FSX. The wheel must return to neutral and reach the full commanded range. The USB control calibration checks for Windows and FSX also apply to most racing wheels.
- Test while parked. Move each control separately and watch the aircraft's control surfaces. Correct reversed movement before attempting take-off.
Which FSX controls should I assign to the wheel and pedals?
Choose assignments according to the wheel's intended job; FSX has no universal steering-wheel preset.

In most default FSX aircraft, nose-wheel steering follows rudder input, although the exact behaviour depends on the aircraft. Why do racing pedals not work properly as rudder pedals?
FSX expects rudder input on one bidirectional axis with a neutral midpoint, while many racing sets report the accelerator and brake as two separate one-way axes.
If the wheel software offers a combined-pedals mode, the two pedals may be usable as one rudder axis, provided both released produces a stable centre position. When the pedals remain separate, FSX cannot normally merge them into one rudder axis; use them as separate wheel-brake axes instead.
Mapping an accelerator to throttle is technically possible, but it behaves unlike an aircraft throttle because it springs back when released. That makes it tiring to hold a power setting and unsuitable for precise approaches.
Why does the aircraft turn or bank by itself?
Uncommanded movement usually comes from duplicate assignments, poor calibration or an axis that does not centre correctly.
- Check every connected controller: FSX can assign the same function to the wheel, joystick and another USB device simultaneously.
- Add a small null zone: this prevents minor wheel or pedal jitter from becoming continuous rudder or aileron input.
- Reverse the axis if necessary: use the reversal setting when left input produces right movement or a released pedal produces full input.
- Reduce the wheel's rotation range: a racing wheel configured for a very large steering range can make aircraft response painfully slow. Change this in the wheel's own software if FSX cannot provide a useful response.
- Check force effects: if the wheel oscillates or fights every movement, reduce its centring or force-feedback effects in the device software.
Is a steering wheel good enough for flying FSX?
A steering wheel is acceptable for ground handling and experimentation, but it is not a complete flight controller because rotation supplies only one centred axis. An aircraft needs at least analogue roll and pitch control, with rudder strongly preferred.
Choose the wheel if you already own one and mainly want taxi steering, differential braking or extra buttons.
