Learn how to disable free look in Microsoft Flight Simulator, remove toggle bindings, tune sensitivity, and fix stuck or drifting camera views.
To disable free look in Microsoft Flight Simulator, open the control settings for each connected device, search for Freelook, then clear the hold and toggle/lockable bindings for the relevant cockpit or external camera. To keep free look but tame it, retain the look axes, remove the toggle binding, and reduce sensitivity.
Free look rotates the camera from its present position. On a standard mouse profile, holding the right mouse button usually provides momentary free look, while the middle mouse button may toggle or lock it. A gamepad normally uses the right stick. Defaults can change with the simulator version, platform and active control preset.
How do I turn free look off completely?
- Open the controls screen. In Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, use
Options > Controls Options. In MSFS 2024, open Settings and select Controls. - Select one input device. Mouse, keyboard, gamepad, joystick and other controllers have separate assignments. Editing the mouse profile will not remove a gamepad binding.
- Search all commands for Freelook. Set the filter to show all commands if that option is available. Look for cockpit and external commands containing terms such as
Freelook,Hold,ToggleorLockable. - Clear the unwanted assignments. Remove both the momentary and toggle commands if you never want that device to activate free look. Repeat for the external camera if necessary.
- Check the look axes. Move the right stick or other suspect control while using Search by Input. Clear the horizontal and vertical cockpit-look axes only if you want a fixed view with no manual panning.
- Save and apply the edited preset. Confirm that the customised profile remains active for that device before returning to the flight.
A common mistake is deleting every camera axis when only the latching behaviour is unwanted. If the view keeps entering free look after a click, remove the toggle or lockable assignment but retain the hold command and look axes.

How can I control free look without disabling it?
Use momentary free look for deliberate camera movement, then reset the view when you need the normal pilot position. Ctrl+Space is the usual PC default for resetting the cockpit view, although the active preset is the final authority.
- Mouse movement is too fast: lower the cockpit or external free-look speed in the camera settings.
- A stick feels twitchy near the centre: flatten its sensitivity curve around the centre. Add a small dead zone only if the axis drifts when untouched.
- The camera continues moving: reduce camera momentum or inertia where that setting is available, then check the input axis for drift.
- The view keeps latching: use the hold command instead of the toggle or lockable command.

Why does the camera still move after free look is disabled?
Another input source is usually moving the camera. Free-look commands, camera axes and head tracking are separate, so removing one does not necessarily stop the others.
- Duplicate device assignment: inspect every connected controller. A spare gamepad or joystick can retain a look-axis binding.
- Stick drift: use Search by Input without touching anything. An axis that registers movement needs a dead zone, calibration or removal from the camera controls.
- Head tracking or VR: disable the tracking source separately. Clearing mouse free look does not override tracked head movement.
- Wrong control preset: updates, cloud synchronisation or switching devices can leave a different preset active. Verify the selected profile before editing it again.
- Locked free look: operate the assigned toggle once to release it, reset the cockpit view, then remove that binding.
What if the mouse will not pan instead?
If free look has stopped working rather than staying active, first restore the mouse binding and check for conflicting assignments. Is free look the same as the drone camera?
No. Free look rotates the cockpit or external viewpoint, while the drone camera can move independently through space. Removing free-look bindings therefore does not disable drone mode or its translation controls.
