For example, the FreeMeshX global terrain package improves elevation data across large areas. It does not add detailed airports, buildings or photographic ground textures, so it can be combined with local scenery when the packages do not conflict.
What should I check before downloading FSX scenery?
Confirm the simulator, dependencies, coverage area and installation method before downloading the archive.
- Simulator compatibility: Look for FSX or FSX: Steam Edition in the description. MSFS scenery cannot be installed in FSX, while FS2004 and Prepar3D packages are not automatically compatible.
- Required components: Some airports depend on separate object libraries, FSX Acceleration content or another scenery package. Missing dependencies usually produce empty areas or missing buildings rather than an obvious error message.
- Complete download: Large regional packages may be divided into several archives. Check whether every part is required before extracting them.
- Geographical coverage: Avoid installing two packages that replace the same airport or contain competing airport-layout BGL files. Typical symptoms include duplicate buildings, overlapping runways and flickering surfaces.
- Included instructions: Follow the package’s readme over generic directions, especially when it specifies scenery-library priority or supplies an installer.
Will free scenery work in FSX: Steam Edition?
Most native FSX scenery works in FSX: Steam Edition because both versions read the usual FSX scenery formats.
The common problem is an older installer that searches only for the boxed FSX registry entry or installation folder. If it reports that FSX is not installed, do not let it write into an unrelated folder; select the actual Steam installation when offered, or use the documented manual method if the package permits extraction.
How do I install downloaded FSX scenery?

Why does downloaded scenery not appear?
Missing scenery is usually caused by the wrong folder level, a package that was never activated, or another add-on taking priority.
- Open the activated scenery folder and check that
Sceneryis directly inside it, not buried inside another identically named folder. - Verify that the area is enabled in the Scenery Library and that a local airport package sits above broader regional scenery where the author instructs it.
- Check that you are flying at the package’s actual coordinates; similarly named airports and replacement AFCAD files are easy to confuse.
- Temporarily disable other scenery covering the same airport. If the problem disappears, re-enable packages one at a time to identify the conflicting BGL.
