Prepar3D is a paid, Windows-only simulator. Buy the licence appropriate to the major version you need through the official Prepar3D/Lockheed Martin store, then sign in to that account’s download portal, download and fully extract the complete installer, run the main setup program, and activate it with the matching licence.
Where is Prepar3D available to download?
The legitimate Prepar3D download comes from the official Lockheed Martin Prepar3D account portal. Start at the official Prepar3D site, purchase the required licence from its Store, sign in with the account used for that purchase, and open the downloads assigned to the licence.
Access belongs to the account holding the relevant licence. If an employer, school or training organisation bought it, its administrator may control the installer and activation details. There is no universal public installer that becomes licensed merely by entering credentials from another version.

Is there a free Prepar3D download?
There is no generally available official free edition or public trial of the Prepar3D simulator. A valid licence is required to obtain and activate the downloadable installer through the normal official account route.
Pages advertising a “Prepar3D free download” or “P3D free download” may be offering freeware add-ons rather than Prepar3D itself. If they claim to provide the complete simulator without a licence, they are not legitimate official sources.
A licence is normally tied to one major version. Owning an older release does not usually grant a newer major version, although updates within the licensed major version may appear in the account. Licence categories also vary between releases: newer product pages may list Personal, Professional or Professional Plus options, while legacy releases can use older labels such as Academic. Choose according to the permitted use stated on the exact product page, not simply the lowest price.
Should I use a Prepar3D torrent?
No. Prepar3D torrents, cracked copies and repacked installers are not legitimate download sources and may contain altered, unsafe or missing files. They cannot be relied upon to activate, repair or receive official updates, and failures caused by modified packages are difficult to diagnose.

- Licence and major version: The installer and licence must belong to the same major release. Check the version required by your training environment and essential add-ons before buying.
- Storage: Leave room for the compressed download, extracted installation files and installed simulator at the same time. Add-on scenery can require considerably more space later.
- Local destination: Do not install over FSX or another Prepar3D major version. Each simulator needs its own empty, dedicated folder.
- Administrative permission: Use a Windows account permitted to install applications and approve the User Account Control prompt when setup requests it.
How do I install Prepar3D step by step?
A normal fresh installation should use the complete package and its main setup executable. The individual Client, Content and Scenery packages are intended for documented repair or update procedures, not as replacements for the initial bootstrapper.
- Sign in to the official account portal. Open the downloads attached to your licence and verify the major version before saving anything. For a fresh installation, select the latest complete build available under that licence unless an organisation or critical add-on requires a specific build.
- Download the full installer package. Save it to an internal local drive. If the portal provides a checksum, compare it with the downloaded file; a mismatch indicates an incomplete or corrupted download.
- Extract every file. Use a short temporary folder such as
C:\P3D-Install. Do not start setup from inside the compressed archive, even if Windows displays its contents, because the installer may then fail to locate its cabinet and component files. - Keep setup local. Avoid cloud-synchronised folders, network shares and removable drives during installation. Security software or interrupted synchronisation can remove or lock one component while setup is running.
- Run the main setup program. In the standard complete package, open
Setup_Prepar3D.exeand approve the Windows prompt. Do not begin withInstall_Client.msi,Install_Content.msiorInstall_Scenery.msi; the main setup program installs components and prerequisites in the required sequence. - Select an installation folder. The default is supported. If you prefer another drive, choose a new dedicated folder rather than an existing FSX, Prepar3D or add-on directory.
- Complete activation. Enter or confirm the requested licence information and ensure it matches the installed major version. Check the PC’s date, time and internet connection if online activation is rejected.
- Run a stock test flight. Launch Prepar3D without add-ons so it can create its configuration and shader files. Load a default aircraft at a default airport, then test graphics, sound and controller input before changing many settings.
Do not permanently force Prepar3D to run as administrator unless a specific permission problem requires it. Mixing an elevated simulator with non-elevated weather, controller or add-on programs can stop those applications communicating correctly.
Which Prepar3D version should I download?
Download the major version covered by your licence and explicitly supported by the add-ons or training setup you intend to use. The official Store identifies the major release available for new purchases, while an existing account shows the builds available for licences already held.

Major versions should use separate installation and configuration folders. Do not copy an entire FSX or older Prepar3D directory over a new installation; reinstall each compatible add-on through its own installer or package method. Why will Prepar3D not install or start?
Most failures are caused by a partially extracted archive, corrupted download, individual MSI package being run out of sequence, insufficient storage or a licence that does not match the installer.

When should I install Prepar3D add-ons?
Install add-ons only after the unmodified simulator has completed a successful test flight. That working baseline makes it far easier to identify the first incompatible aircraft, scenery package or utility.
