How do I fix black airport buildings or terrain in FSX?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Fix black airport buildings or terrain in FSX by isolating bad scenery, DX10 Preview, shader-cache, injector and texture-installation faults.

Black airport buildings or terrain in FSX usually mean the simulator cannot load or render the required textures. The common causes are an incomplete scenery install, DirectX 10 Preview incompatibility, a graphics injector, or a corrupt shader cache. Identify whether the fault affects one add-on or all scenery, then fix that branch.

What does the pattern of black scenery indicate?

The scope and timing of the fault usually reveal whether the scenery package or FSX's rendering system is responsible.

How do I fix black scenery in FSX?

Work through these checks in order, retesting after each change so that you know which component caused the problem.

  1. Establish the scope. Load a default aircraft at a stock airport in daylight and clear weather. Then test the affected location with its add-on scenery disabled. If stock scenery works, concentrate on the add-on rather than changing global graphics settings.
  2. Turn off DirectX 10 Preview. Clear the DirectX 10 Preview option in FSX's display settings, close the simulator completely and launch it again. Older scenery materials and texture formats can render incorrectly under FSX's preview DX10 path even when the same package works under DX9.
  3. Disable the newest scenery entry. Untick the suspect area in the Scenery Library instead of deleting it. Restart FSX and revisit the same coordinates, time and season. If the black surfaces disappear, check that package's installation and priority.
  4. Inspect the scenery folders. An activated scenery area normally points to a parent folder containing sibling Scenery and Texture folders. A mistake we see constantly is an extra nested folder created during extraction, leaving FSX able to load the scenery BGL files but unable to find their textures. For black ground tiles, compare the installation with our guidance on photoreal scenery folders and Scenery Library placement. Do not copy unrelated files into FSX's global texture folders; that can hide one fault while creating texture conflicts elsewhere.
  5. Rebuild the shader cache. Close FSX, open the simulator-specific folder beneath %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft, and rename its Shaders folder if present. FSX recreates the cache at the next launch. Boxed FSX and Steam Edition can use different folders, especially when installed side by side, so alter only the folder belonging to the version being tested.
  6. Remove graphics injectors temporarily. ENB presets and DirectX wrappers can cause black surfaces when their DLLs or configuration no longer suit the active rendering mode. Follow our procedure to remove ENB safely and restore FSX's original rendering path. Never delete similarly named DLLs from Windows system folders; only remove injector files deliberately placed beside fsx.exe.
  7. Test with a fresh FSX configuration. Back up and rename the active FSX configuration file in the appropriate AppData folder, then launch the simulator to generate a clean one. This resets graphics options and removes unsafe tweaks, but it also resets personal settings, so retain the backup and restore only known-good changes.
  8. Repair damaged default files. Steam Edition users can run the client's file-verification function; boxed FSX users can run the repair option from their original installation source. Back up configuration files and modified default content first. Repairing FSX will not replace textures omitted from a third-party scenery package.
  9. Reset graphics-driver overrides. Return forced anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering and other per-application overrides to their defaults. If the fault began after a driver change, install a stable driver appropriate to the graphics card and test FSX before restoring custom settings.

Why is only one add-on airport black?

A fault limited to one airport almost always belongs to that airport package or one of its required object libraries.

Black buildings at every time of day suggest missing base textures or incompatible material definitions. Buildings that fail only at night or in one season point instead to an incomplete night or seasonal texture set. Re-extract or reinstall the complete package, confirm that every supplied texture folder was installed, and check whether the airport requires a separate library included with the download.

If the default airport displays correctly after the add-on is disabled, leave global drivers and FSX files alone. A simulator-wide reinstall cannot manufacture files that were omitted from an airport archive.

Why does terrain turn black later in a flight?

Black textures that appear only after a long or complex flight usually indicate resource pressure rather than a permanently missing file.

FSX is a 32-bit application with finite address space. Dense airports, high-resolution aircraft, extensive scenery, AI traffic and large textures can exhaust available resources as the flight progresses. Restarting FSX may clear the symptom temporarily; the lasting fix is to reduce the heaviest contributors and load only the scenery required for the route. Our FSX performance and memory-pressure adjustments explain which settings have the greatest practical effect.

If the same tile turns black immediately at the same coordinates after every restart, treat it as a damaged or incomplete scenery layer instead.

Can terrain mesh cause black ground in FSX?

Terrain mesh controls elevation, not ground colour, so mesh alone does not normally produce a solid black texture.

Mesh can expose airport elevation conflicts or interact with overlapping scenery areas, but black ground still points to a texture-bearing layer such as photoreal scenery, landclass support files or an airport ground polygon. Disable those layers individually before removing mesh that is otherwise displaying the correct terrain shape.
