Learn what ENB does in FSX, where to copy its DLL and INI files, how to enable it, and how to fix black screens, crashes and Steam issues.
ENB for FSX is a DirectX 9 post-processing injector that changes colour, bloom, contrast and other screen effects without replacing scenery. To install it, copy the supplied ENB DLL and configuration file into the folder containing fsx.exe, run FSX in DirectX 9 mode, then use the package’s toggle key to enable it.
What does ENB change in FSX?
ENB changes the finished image after FSX renders it, giving the simulator a different colour balance, brightness, bloom and contrast. It does not install new clouds, airport textures, aircraft models or weather data.
The effect covers most of the displayed frame, so an aggressive preset can also make instrument panels, menus and night lighting too dark or bright. The appearance comes from values in enbseries.ini; different INI presets can therefore look markedly different while using the same ENB DLL.
How do I install ENB in FSX?
- Close FSX completely. Do not install or replace graphics DLLs while the simulator is running.
- Download and extract the package. You can get the FSX ENB DLL and matching INI configuration from our library. Extract the archive to a temporary folder first rather than opening files directly from it.
- Find the FSX root folder. This is the directory containing
fsx.exealongside folders such asSimObjectsandScenery. For FSX: Steam Edition, use Steam’s command for browsing the game’s installed files if the library is not in its default location. - Check for an existing graphics injector. If the root folder already contains
d3d9.dllorenbseries.ini, move those files to a safe backup folder before proceeding. Do not overwrite them blindly; the DLL may belong to another injector or graphics wrapper. - Copy the ENB files beside
fsx.exe. A typical FSX ENB package suppliesd3d9.dllandenbseries.ini. They do not belong inAddon Scenery,ModulesorSimObjects. - Use FSX’s DirectX 9 mode. Clear the Preview DirectX 10 option in FSX display settings and restart the simulator if you changed it. This legacy ENB build works through Direct3D 9.
- Load a flight and test the toggle. The commonly distributed FSX configuration uses Shift+F12 to switch the effect on and off, but check the package notes because a modified preset can assign a different key. Compare the same cockpit and exterior view with ENB enabled and disabled.
Does ENB work with FSX: Steam Edition?
ENB can work with FSX: Steam Edition when the simulator is using DirectX 9, but the files must be installed beside the Steam edition’s own fsx.exe. Copying them into an old boxed-FSX directory is a common reason nothing happens.
Older graphics injectors are more sensitive than aircraft or scenery add-ons to Windows permissions, overlays and other DLL-based tools. Our guidance on FSX add-on compatibility with Steam Edition explains the broader path and permissions differences.
Why is ENB not working or causing a black screen?
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No visible change | The files are in the wrong folder, ENB is toggled off, or FSX is using DirectX 10 Preview | Confirm that the DLL is beside fsx.exe, disable DirectX 10 Preview, restart FSX and test the package’s toggle key. |
| FSX crashes before loading a flight | An incompatible or conflicting d3d9.dll is being loaded | Remove the new DLL and confirm FSX starts normally. Restore only one graphics injector at a time. |
| Black screen or severe graphical corruption | The ENB build is incompatible with the active graphics path, driver configuration or another overlay | Remove d3d9.dll, restart FSX and test without other injectors or overlays before attempting a clean reinstall. |
| Panels or night scenes are unreadable | The preset’s bloom, brightness or colour values are too strong | Restore the original INI, reduce the relevant effect cautiously, or toggle ENB off for that flight. |
| Lower frame rate or stuttering | The post-processing effects exceed available GPU headroom | Compare performance with ENB disabled, reduce expensive effects, then apply our FSX frame-rate and performance tuning steps. |
If removing d3d9.dll immediately fixes a startup failure, the problem is with the injector or a DLL conflict rather than scenery, aircraft or the ENB INI alone. Avoid stacking ENB with another tool that also installs a Direct3D proxy DLL unless its documentation explicitly supports chain-loading.
Should I use ENB or ReShade for FSX?
Choose ENB when you want a specific legacy FSX preset and are staying with DirectX 9; choose ReShade when you want broader control over individual shaders and are prepared to configure them.
| Factor | ENB | ReShade |
|---|---|---|
| Best suited to | Legacy DirectX 9 presets with a simple supplied configuration | Customisable post-processing with selectable effects |
| Configuration | Primarily through enbseries.ini | Through its own installer, effect files and in-game interface |
| Main risk | Old DLL compatibility and overly strong bloom or colour settings | Incorrect rendering API selection, excessive shaders or conflicts with other injectors |
Do not install both casually: they may compete for the same graphics-loading mechanism. If ENB is unsuitable for your setup, follow our FSX ReShade installation and configuration instructions after removing ENB cleanly.
How do I uninstall ENB from FSX?
Close FSX and remove the ENB files you added to the root directory, normally d3d9.dll and enbseries.ini. Restore any files you backed up before installation, then start FSX and confirm that it runs without the ENB toggle or visual effect.
Only delete files you know came from the ENB package. If d3d9.dll existed before installation, it may belong to another graphics tool and should be restored from your backup rather than discarded.
