How do I fix black boxes around trees in FSX?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Fix black boxes around trees in FSX by checking scenery shadows, DirectX 10 Preview, broken alpha textures, add-on conflicts and the shader cache.

Black boxes around trees in FSX and FSX: Steam Edition usually mean the tree billboard’s transparent area is being drawn as opaque, or Ground Scenery Shadows is shading the whole rectangle. Disable scenery shadows, test without DirectX 10 Preview, then isolate replacement vegetation textures and rebuild the shader cache.

What causes black boxes around FSX trees?

FSX draws most trees using crossed flat polygons with transparent areas around the foliage. If the texture’s alpha channel is missing, damaged or rendered incorrectly, the rectangular polygon becomes visible as a black box.

How do I remove the black tree boxes?

The quickest fix is to identify whether FSX is drawing rectangular shadows or failing to process texture transparency.

  1. Test Ground Scenery Shadows. Open FSX’s display settings, find the scenery options and clear Ground Scenery Shadows. Reload the flight. If the boxes were dark patches projected onto the terrain, no texture replacement is needed.
  2. Turn off DirectX 10 Preview. If the option is present in the graphics settings, clear Preview DirectX 10, close FSX completely and start it again. Older vegetation and scenery textures were often prepared for FSX’s normal DirectX 9 renderer and may lose transparency in Preview mode.
  3. Check a default location. Load an unmodified default airport near autogen trees. If those trees display correctly, the graphics engine is working and the fault belongs to the affected airport, scenery layer or object library. Reducing autogen density only conceals the bad objects; it does not repair them.
  4. Disable recent scenery and vegetation add-ons. Untick the suspect entry in the Scenery Library, restart FSX and test the same location and season. When several packages were installed together, use our controlled method for testing FSX with add-ons disabled one at a time rather than removing everything at once.
  5. Restore the package’s textures. Reinstall the scenery from a clean archive and preserve its folder structure. In the common local-scenery layout, the package’s Texture folder sits beside its Scenery folder; an extra nested directory can leave FSX using an incomplete or incorrect texture set. The alpha-channel and texture-fallback checks for wrongly rendered FSX add-ons also apply when vegetation polygons turn opaque.
  6. Rebuild the shader cache. Close FSX, open its profile beneath %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft, and find the folder used by FSX or FSX-SE. Rename the shader-cache folder, commonly beginning with Shaders, rather than deleting it. FSX creates a fresh cache at the next start; the first load may take slightly longer.
  7. Remove forced graphics overrides. Reset the FSX-specific profile in the graphics driver control panel to application-controlled settings, especially if compatibility flags or forced transparency antialiasing were added. Change the FSX profile only, then restart the simulator before testing.

Why did the problem start after installing scenery?

An add-on can supply its own tree models and textures or overwrite shared files in FSX’s main texture directory. A mistake we see constantly is copying every supplied texture into the simulator’s global Texture folder even when the package was designed to keep them inside its own scenery directory.

Disabling a Scenery Library entry will not undo files that an installer replaced globally. Restore the package’s backup, use its uninstaller, or repair the original FSX files. If the boxes appear only when the simulator date selects spring, autumn or winter, reinstall all seasonal texture variants rather than copying the visible summer texture into every slot.

Do I need to reinstall FSX?

A full reinstall is rarely necessary for black boxes around trees. For FSX: Steam Edition, Steam’s file-verification command can restore altered default files; boxed FSX can use the installation media’s repair option where available. Back up custom files first.

File verification replaces changed default files but may leave unrelated third-party files behind. Remove or rename the suspect add-on files as well, otherwise the same bad texture can still take precedence after verification. Only consider rebuilding the active fsx.cfg after shadows, DirectX 10 Preview, add-ons, textures, shaders and driver overrides have all been ruled out.
