Fix FSX widescreen stretching step by step

The reliable sequence is to correct the rendering resolution first, then change FSX’s aspect-ratio setting.

  1. Find the monitor’s native resolution. Check the resolution marked as recommended in Windows display settings. Windows text scaling, such as 125%, is separate and does not change the monitor’s native pixel dimensions.
  2. Match that resolution in FSX. Open FSX’s Display settings, select the Graphics tab and choose the matching full-screen resolution.   3. Close FSX before editing its configuration. Boxed FSX normally stores fsx.cfg at %APPDATA%\Microsoft\FSX\fsx.cfg. FSX: Steam Edition may use that location or %APPDATA%\Microsoft\FSX-SE\fsx.cfg, particularly when it coexists with another FSX installation. If both files exist, identify the one modified when the edition you use last closed.
  4. Enable widescreen field-of-view handling. Back up fsx.cfg, open it in a plain-text editor and find the existing [Display] section. Change or add one line: WideViewAspect=True. Add it only once and do not create a second [Display] section. Make sure the editor does not save the file as fsx.cfg.txt.
  5. Check GPU and monitor scaling. If FSX must run below native resolution, choose an option labelled Aspect ratio, Preserve aspect ratio, Original or 1:1 rather than Full screen or Stretch. The exact wording differs between graphics drivers and monitors. Preserving a mismatched aspect ratio may produce black bars, but it prevents distortion.
  6. Restart FSX and inspect a round instrument. If round gauges remain round, geometric stretching is fixed. Adjust the individual cockpit view’s zoom only if the framing still feels too close or too wide.

What does WideViewAspect=True actually change?

WideViewAspect=True corrects how FSX frames its 3D views; it does not change the number of pixels being rendered. It preserves a more suitable vertical field of view and exposes additional scene horizontally instead of framing a widescreen display like a 4:3 monitor.

This is why native resolution and WideViewAspect solve different problems. Native resolution stops circles becoming ovals, while WideViewAspect addresses the cropped or over-zoomed cockpit appearance. For a natural result, enable the setting first and then tune the cockpit zoom using the recommended FSX view and realism adjustments.

Why can FSX still look distorted on an ultrawide monitor?

Some edge distortion remains on very wide screens because FSX projects one flat 3D view across a large horizontal field of view. This is most visible near the edges of 21:9 and 32:9 displays and is not the same fault as stretching the entire image.

Increasing the view zoom slightly narrows the field of view and reduces peripheral distortion, at the cost of showing less of the cockpit. Multiple separately positioned views can work better across several monitors, though they require more processing power. If only a legacy 2D cockpit panel remains distorted after these changes, do not reinstall FSX or alter the global display resolution to compensate. That panel was probably authored for 4:3; use its virtual cockpit or a widescreen-compatible panel instead.
