To set up three monitors in FSX or FSX: Steam Edition, first extend the Windows desktop across all three displays. Then either run FSX windowed and undock separate view windows onto the side screens, or combine the displays with NVIDIA Surround or AMD Eyefinity and select the resulting ultra-wide resolution in FSX.
Which three-monitor layout should you use?
FSX supports two practical three-screen arrangements, but they produce different results.

Choose independent views when the side monitors wrap around the seat or need different content. Choose a combined ultra-wide desktop when you want one uninterrupted forward view and the best performance of the two methods.
How do I configure three independent FSX views?
Run FSX in windowed mode, keep the main view on the centre monitor and create two undocked windows for the side displays.
- Extend the Windows desktop. In Windows display settings, choose the extended-desktop option rather than duplicating the screens. Use Identify and arrange the monitor boxes in the same left-to-right order as the physical displays.
- Make the centre monitor primary. Use matching native resolutions, refresh rates and Windows scaling where possible. A consistent scaling value prevents misplaced windows and awkward pointer alignment in this older simulator.
- Launch FSX in windowed mode. Position the main simulator window on the centre display and load the aircraft and cockpit view you intend to use.
- Create two additional views. Use the FSX Views menu to open another cockpit or outside view for each side screen. Our FSX view and keyboard-command reference lists the relevant view-window controls.
- Undock each new window. Right-click inside the view, select Undock Window, then drag it to the left or right monitor. Resize or maximise it on that display.
- Set the camera directions. Keep the centre view facing forward and pan the side views left and right. Match each camera offset to the physical angle of its monitor, then use the same zoom and eyepoint across all three views to minimise broken sightlines.
- Save a template flight. Once the windows are positioned, save the flight and load it for later sessions. FSX can retain many view arrangements this way, although some add-on aircraft reopen or replace their own panel windows.
A mistake we see constantly is stretching the main FSX window over three extended monitors and expecting three separate camera angles. That only enlarges one viewport. Angled side displays require separately directed views unless the screens have been grouped as one ultra-wide monitor.
How do I make FSX use one ultra-wide resolution?
NVIDIA Surround or AMD Eyefinity can present three physical monitors to FSX as one very wide display.
- Create the display group in the graphics driver and arrange the screens in the correct order.
- Confirm the combined resolution in Windows. Three 1920×1080 screens normally produce 5760×1080 before any bezel correction.
- Restart FSX after creating the group, then select the combined resolution in its graphics settings.
- Close FSX and back up
fsx.cfg. Find the active configuration beneath%APPDATA%\Microsoft\FSX, or the correspondingFSX-SEfolder used by some Steam Edition installations. - Set the wide-screen option. Under the
[Display]section, change or addWideViewAspect=True. Do not leave duplicate versions of the setting in the file.
This method gives FSX one continuous viewport, not three perspective-correct cameras. Adjust the cockpit zoom after enabling WideViewAspect; extreme edge stretching is a limitation of using one very wide field of view, especially when the side monitors are sharply angled.
Can the side monitors show FSX instruments?
Yes. Using the centre screen for the outside view and the side screens for undocked 2D panels, GPS units or instruments usually performs better than rendering three exterior views.
Open an available pop-up panel from the aircraft's instrument-panel menu, undock it and move it to the required display. Why is the three-monitor setup not working properly?
Most FSX triple-monitor faults come from an unextended desktop, a view that remains docked or the heavy rendering cost of additional outside views.
- The window will not move to another screen: confirm Windows is extending rather than duplicating the displays, then right-click the FSX view and undock it.
- The frame rate falls sharply: every additional outside view renders another scene. Reduce clouds, autogen, traffic and anti-aliasing, replace side views with instrument panels, or use one Surround/Eyefinity viewport.
- A side view is black or flashing: test in windowed mode and connect all three displays to the main graphics card where possible. Mixed integrated and discrete graphics, USB display adapters and DX10 Preview can cause trouble with undocked 3D views.
- The scenery does not line up: use matching resolutions, zoom levels, eyepoints and view types. FSX has no modern multi-projector perspective correction, so perfect seams on angled monitors are not always possible.
- The ultra-wide resolution is missing: verify that Windows sees one combined display, close FSX completely and reopen it after creating the graphics-driver display group.
- Windows reopen in the wrong place: keep the same monitor order, primary display and scaling between sessions. Load the saved flight only after Windows has detected all three screens.
