Why is an aircraft visual model missing in FSX?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Fix a missing FSX aircraft visual model by checking model folders, model.cfg, .mdl files, repaint dependencies and DirectX 10 Preview.

An aircraft visual model is usually missing in FSX or FSX: Steam Edition because aircraft.cfg points to the wrong model folder, model.cfg names a missing .mdl file, the download is only a repaint, or an older model conflicts with DirectX 10 Preview. Verify those links, restore the required files, then restart FSX.

What does the missing aircraft look like?

The exact symptom identifies which part of the package is broken.

What FSX showsLikely cause
Aircraft is absent from the selection menuWrong installation folder, double-nested folders or an invalid aircraft.cfg
Pilot, lights or cockpit appear without the fuselageMissing exterior .mdl file or an incorrect model= reference
Exterior works but the virtual cockpit is absentMissing or incorrect interior= target in model.cfg, or the aircraft has no virtual cockpit
Aircraft has a shape but is white, grey or transparentTexture problem rather than a missing visual model
Only one repaint failsThat repaint references the wrong model variant or requires a separate base aircraft

How do I restore the missing FSX aircraft model?

  1. Establish whether the fault affects one aircraft. Load a default FSX aircraft and another livery from the affected add-on. If the defaults work, concentrate on the add-on package rather than FSX or the graphics driver.
  2. Find the actual aircraft folder. For fixed-wing aircraft, it belongs under SimObjects\Airplanes; helicopters normally use SimObjects\Rotorcraft. The folder containing aircraft.cfg must also contain the relevant model and texture folders. A common mistake is an extra level such as Airplanes\AircraftName\AircraftName\aircraft.cfg.
  3. Back up and inspect aircraft.cfg. Find the [fltsim.x] entry for the affected livery, using fields such as ui_variation= to identify it. Our instructions for finding and safely editing aircraft.cfg cover the boxed and Steam installations.
  4. Match the model entry to its folder. A blank model= line uses the folder named model. An entry such as model=VC requires model.VC beside aircraft.cfg. Correct the reference only when the intended folder is present; do not rename folders at random.
  5. Check model.cfg and its MDL files. Open model.cfg inside the selected model folder. Under [models], normal=aircraft_exterior requires the corresponding exterior .mdl file, while interior=aircraft_interior points to the virtual-cockpit model. Restore misspelt or missing targets from the original archive rather than assigning an unrelated model. If FSX explicitly reports “Model not defined”, follow our model-reference error checks.
  6. Confirm that the download is a complete aircraft. A repaint package may contain only a texture folder, thumbnail and a block of [fltsim.x] text. It must be installed into the specified base aircraft and use that aircraft's existing model; treating it as a standalone aircraft leaves FSX with no visual model to load.
  7. Check simulator compatibility. A model made only for Prepar3D or Microsoft Flight Simulator cannot be made into an FSX model by changing folder names. Older FS2004-format aircraft may work in normal FSX rendering but disappear or display incorrectly with Preview DirectX 10 enabled. Clear that option in FSX's graphics settings, restart the simulator and test again. If this fixes it, use an FSX-native version of the aircraft or leave the preview option disabled.
  8. Restart FSX after corrections. Reloading the flight does not always refresh every aircraft definition. Close and reopen FSX, select the corrected livery and test it in both the aircraft preview and a simple free-flight session.

Why does FSX show only the pilot or cockpit?

A pilot-only aircraft normally means FSX has loaded part of the package but cannot load the main exterior model. The usual causes are a missing .mdl, the wrong model= value or a model folder left inside the download's extra wrapper directory.

Compare the installed package with the original archive before editing anything. Our focused pilot-only aircraft diagnosis lists the files and folder relationships to check for this particular symptom.

What if every aircraft model is invisible?

If default aircraft are also invisible, the problem is global rather than an individual add-on. Disable Preview DirectX 10, remove any third-party shader or model replacement that caused the change, and restore FSX's graphics settings.

If stock aircraft files were altered or deleted, use Steam's file-verification function for FSX: Steam Edition or the repair option from the boxed installation media. Back up add-ons and modified default files first because a repair can replace changed stock content. Regenerating FSX's configuration file is a later option, but it also resets simulator preferences and should not be the first response to one broken add-on.

Why is the aircraft visible but white or grey?

A visible shape with missing colours means the visual model is loading; its textures are not. Check the livery's texture= entry, the matching texture.* folder and any required fallback textures using our FSX missing-texture troubleshooting steps. Changing model= will not repair a texture-only fault.
