Why does my flight simulator lose FPS on long flights?

Flight simulators usually lose FPS during long flights because memory use, add-on activity, AI traffic, scenery streaming or heat accumulates over time. The destination may also be far heavier than the departure. A steady decline suggests resource build-up or throttling; a sudden arrival drop usually indicates airport, traffic or weather load.

Why does FPS fall as a flight gets longer?

Memory growth is not automatically a memory leak. Simulators retain scenery and textures to avoid reloading them, and some usage should level off. A leak is more likely when committed memory rises continuously under similar conditions, never falls after scenery is left behind and improves only after closing the simulator or removing an add-on.

How do I identify the long-flight FPS problem?

  1. Create a baseline. Use the same aircraft, weather, traffic level, route and graphics settings. Note FPS, frame time, RAM, VRAM, CPU and GPU clock speeds at fixed stages of the flight.
  2. Load the destination directly. Start a fresh session at the arrival airport with the same aircraft, runway, time and weather. If performance is equally poor, the airport or local workload is responsible. If the fresh session is smooth, something accumulated during the flight.
  3. Run without optional add-ons. Temporarily use the simulator's safe mode where available, or move third-party aircraft, scenery and plugins out of their add-on location. Stop external traffic, weather, map and telemetry programs as well. Do not delete anything while testing.
  4. Reduce traffic first. AI aircraft, road vehicles, airport workers and multiplayer objects can burden the main thread. Long sessions may also expose traffic add-ons that fail to remove old objects correctly.
  5. Watch memory pressure. If system memory is nearly full and storage activity increases, the operating system may be paging data. Leave the page file enabled and system-managed. If VRAM is exhausted, lower texture resolution, object density or demanding scenery options rather than assuming extra system RAM will solve it.
  6. Check for throttling. High temperature alone is not proof. Look for CPU or GPU clock speeds falling below their earlier-flight values while FPS declines. Cooling, fan settings, blocked vents and laptop power modes then become relevant.
  7. Reintroduce add-ons in groups. Restore half at a time until the loss returns, then narrow that group again. This is much faster than testing every package individually.

Is it low FPS or long-flight stuttering?

Sustained low FPS and intermittent pauses require different fixes. If the frame rate recovers between freezes, investigate storage, scenery streaming, cache activity and add-ons rather than lowering every graphics setting. A mistake we see constantly is judging performance only by the FPS counter. A simulator holding 35 FPS with even frame delivery can feel better than one alternating rapidly between 45 and 25 FPS.

What differs between flight simulators?

Microsoft Flight Simulator

MSFS can combine streamed scenery, photogrammetry, live traffic, complex glass cockpits and a detailed destination airport during descent. Rolling-cache or network problems usually create pauses, while main-thread load, memory pressure and destination complexity produce a more persistent loss. X-Plane

In X-Plane, inspect plugins, AI aircraft, custom scenery, orthophoto loading and VRAM use. A plugin that performs work every flight loop can become expensive when it retains aircraft, weather or route data over several hours. Test the same aircraft with plugins disabled before reducing global graphics quality.

FSX and Prepar3D

FSX and many Prepar3D workloads are strongly limited by the main simulation thread, especially with heavy AI traffic, autogen, weather and complex gauges. Legacy FSX is also a 32-bit application, so excessive address-space use can end in an out-of-memory error rather than merely lower FPS. Will more RAM or restarting fix long-flight FPS loss?

More RAM helps only when physical memory pressure and paging are the cause; it does not repair an add-on leak, a full VRAM allocation, a saturated main thread or thermal throttling. Likewise, restarting the simulator clears accumulated resources and is a useful diagnostic, but it is only a workaround if every long flight slows down again.

The most decisive test is the fresh-load destination comparison. Smooth performance after loading directly at the destination points towards accumulated resources, plugins or traffic. Poor performance in both tests means the arrival airport, aircraft, weather or settings are simply demanding more than the system can deliver.
