How should FlightGear be set up for training?

- Choose the closest aircraft variant. Match the panel, engine controls, avionics and performance to the training aircraft. FlightGear aircraft differ substantially in fidelity, so confirm important behaviour against the approved aircraft documentation. Can FlightGear hours count towards a pilot licence?
Time spent on an ordinary FlightGear home installation does not count as loggable flight training or flight time.

Can a student pilot learn to fly with FlightGear alone?

Which simulator habits cause problems in real training?
The main risk is practising an incorrect technique until it becomes automatic.

- Forcing an unstable approach: practise the same go-around decision that would apply in the aircraft instead of pausing or resetting near the runway.
- Using the wrong avionics: select a panel resembling the training aircraft rather than learning equipment that will not be available in the lesson.
- Trusting simulator data operationally: verify weather, terrain, airport and navigation information through the approved sources used for the real flight.
