To set up the FlyByWire A32NX for VATSIM in Microsoft Flight Simulator, install the aircraft and an approved pilot client on a Windows PC, configure audio and model matching, file and load the same route, tune COM1, set the transponder to AUTO, then connect only while parked at a gate or stand.

What do you need before connecting?

You need a PC installation of Microsoft Flight Simulator, a supported A32NX build, a VATSIM account, an approved pilot client such as vPilot, and a headset with a microphone and push-to-talk button. The procedure applies to MSFS 2020 and to MSFS 2024 on PC when the A32NX build explicitly supports that simulator.

Xbox and PlayStation cannot use this setup because the A32NX Community add-on and the external VATSIM pilot client require a PC. SimBrief and Navigraph are useful but are not VATSIM requirements.

  • A32NX installation: Use one supported aircraft build and remove obsolete or duplicate copies. For MSFS 2020, follow our clean A32NX installation steps if the FlyByWire aircraft does not appear or loads with missing systems.
  • Pilot client: Install a VATSIM-approved MSFS client and allow it through the Windows firewall when prompted.
  • Audio: Use a headset, select its microphone and headphones inside the pilot client, and bind a momentary push-to-talk control.
  • Model matching: Install or enable an MSFS-compatible model set if you want accurate representations of other aircraft. Model matching is not required to connect and does not affect how controllers identify your A32NX.

FlyByWire A32NX VATSIM setup step by step

The dependable order is to configure Microsoft Flight Simulator first, then the pilot client, and finally the aircraft.

  1. Load the correct A32NX build. The Stable branch is normally the sensible choice for an online flight unless you need a specific fix from another branch. Do not leave two A32NX package versions in the Community folder.
  2. Disable conflicting traffic. Turn off MSFS multiplayer, real-time online traffic and AI traffic so the VATSIM client is the only source of moving aircraft. Reduce airport ground aircraft if parked models block stands.
  3. Spawn at a suitable stand. Start at a gate or parking position, never an active runway or taxiway. Before connecting, check that another online pilot is not already occupying the stand.
  4. Configure the pilot client. Enter your VATSIM credentials, select the correct microphone and playback device, bind push-to-talk, and confirm the client is connected to MSFS. Do not use the same button for push-to-talk and an MSFS ATC command.
  5. Enter the callsign and aircraft type. Use exactly the callsign filed in your flight plan. Airline flights normally use the three-letter ICAO operator designator, such as BAW123, rather than the two-letter ticketing code. The ICAO aircraft type for an A320neo is A20N.
  6. File the route before requesting clearance. Include the departure, destination, route, cruise level and aircraft type. Do not guess equipment or capability codes; use values generated for the aircraft and only claim functions you can operate.
  7. Load the same route into the FMGC. Filing a VATSIM flight plan does not automatically program the MCDU. You can enter it manually or use our SimBrief connection procedure for the A32NX. Amend the MCDU if ATC clears a different route, runway, SID or STAR.
  8. Set the radios and transponder. Tune the required frequency on VHF1, select VHF1 for transmission and reception, enter the assigned squawk code, and place the ATC transponder selector in AUTO. Confirm that the pilot client reports altitude transmission when required.
  9. Connect while stationary. Connect with the parking brake set and remain at the stand until cleared to push or taxi. If another aircraft appears on your position, disconnect before relocating rather than slewing while connected.

Which MSFS traffic and assistance settings should you use?

Disable simulator-generated aircraft and automated radio control because they conflict with VATSIM traffic injection and controller frequencies.

How should the A32NX radios and transponder be set?

VHF1, the A32NX ATC panel and the pilot client must all show compatible states before ATC can hear and identify you correctly.

Place the controller frequency in the active VHF1 position and select VHF1 on the audio control panel for both transmission and reception. The frequency shown as COM1 in the pilot client should change with the cockpit radio; if it does not, check the client-to-simulator connection and disable any AI radio assistance.

Enter the assigned four-digit code on the ATC panel and use AUTO for normal operations. Check the pilot client for Mode C or altitude-reporting status. If the cockpit is set correctly but the client remains in standby, use the client's transponder control and recheck its connection to MSFS.

The TCAS traffic mode and transponder altitude reporting are related cockpit systems but are not the same control. Moving TCAS to TA/RA will not fix a client that is still reporting transponder standby.

Why can ATC see the A32NX but not hear me?

Most VATSIM communication failures come from one mismatched audio device, radio selection or push-to-talk binding rather than the FlyByWire aircraft itself.

A mistake we see constantly is treating the filed VATSIM route, the SimBrief plan and the route inside the MCDU as one synchronised record. They are separate: file the intended route, load it into the A32NX, then change both your aircraft setup and expectations when ATC issues an amended clearance.
