Which flight simulators have a free PC demo, and how do I download one?

For general PC flight simulation, the practical free choices are the X-Plane desktop demo and the legacy Microsoft Flight Simulator X demo. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024 have no standalone free PC demo. FlightGear is the better option if you want a complete, unrestricted simulator rather than an evaluation.

Free PC flight simulator demo options compared

X-Plane is the best demo for assessing a modern civil simulator, while the FSX demo is useful only for sampling the much older Flight Simulator X platform.

Choose X-Plane when the purpose of the demo is to check your PC, joystick or preferred style of flying before a purchase. Choose FSX only for the original FSX experience. If the priority is unlimited free flying, FlightGear makes more sense than repeatedly restarting a restricted demo.

A demo frame-rate test is only an estimate. Use the same screen resolution, weather, cockpit view and graphics settings you expect to fly with, and leave some performance headroom: a restricted demo area cannot reproduce every large airport, dense city or add-on aircraft found in the full simulator.

Is there a Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 demo free download for PC?

No. Neither Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 nor Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 has a conventional free downloadable PC demo installer.

A search result labelled “Microsoft Flight Simulator demo” or “MSFS demo” is often the older FSX demo, an aircraft add-on, a video, or a misleading repack. A file claiming to be an unlocked MSFS 2020 or 2024 demo should not be installed. The legitimate FSX demo uses a different engine, scenery system and aircraft format, so it cannot predict how either modern release will run.

Subscription access, introductory promotions and free-play events are not permanent standalone demos. How do you download and install a free flight simulator demo?

Download the simulator installer itself, not an aircraft or scenery archive that depends on a separate simulator.

1. Choose the right package. Use X-Plane for a modern civil-flight evaluation, FSX for the legacy Microsoft demo, FlightGear for unrestricted freeware, or DCS World if your interest is combat aviation.
2. Check the platform and major release. Read the package description before downloading. A Mac or Linux installer will not run on Windows, and an add-on made for one major X-Plane release may not work with another.
3. Download to a local folder. Keep enough free storage for the downloaded file, temporary setup data and any content retrieved during installation. When troubleshooting, avoid running setup from a network drive or cloud-synchronised folder.
4. Let the download finish and scan it. A partial .exe or damaged .zip often produces vague setup errors. Compare the downloaded size with the listing when one is supplied, then scan the file with Windows Security.
5. Extract archives before running setup. Do not launch an installer from inside a compressed archive. Extract every file first so setup can find its supporting data, then use a separate installation folder rather than mixing a demo with an existing full simulator.
6. Complete the first launch before adding anything. Allow file validation and content downloads to finish. Start with moderate graphics settings, calibrate the controller, and bind pitch, roll, yaw and throttle before diagnosing aircraft behaviour.

Common flight simulator demo problems and fixes

Most demo failures are caused by an incomplete download, an old Windows dependency, security blocking, controller configuration or confusion between a simulator and an add-on.

• The installer does nothing: download it again to a local folder and extract the complete archive. Running setup while files are still compressed is a frequent cause of missing-file errors.
• Windows displays a security warning: old FSX-era installers may not meet modern signing expectations. Verify the source and scan the file rather than disabling security protection. A warning is not, by itself, proof that a file is safe or unsafe.
• FSX reports a missing DirectX file: the demo can require older optional DirectX components that are not included with a standard modern Windows installation. Use Microsoft’s signed legacy runtime package; never download an isolated DLL from an unknown source.
• The FSX installer still fails: try a normal installation first. If that fails, use Windows compatibility handling and administrator privileges only after the package has been verified and scanned.
• X-Plane stops accepting joystick input: if controls work initially and stop after a consistent period, the demo time restriction is operating normally. Reinstalling the joystick driver will not remove that limit.
• The aircraft responds incorrectly from the start: calibrate the controller and check for duplicated axis assignments. Two devices bound to the same pitch, roll or throttle axis can fight each other.
• The simulator opens to a black screen or closes: update the graphics driver, disable unnecessary overlays, select the high-performance GPU on a dual-GPU laptop and retry with lower graphics settings.

Can you install aircraft and scenery in a demo?

Sometimes, but add-on support in a demo is unreliable and should not be assumed.

An installer may require a full-version registry entry or files omitted from the evaluation package. X-Plane aircraft must match the installed major release, while scenery outside the permitted demo area has little practical use. FSX add-ons may likewise expect the complete simulator rather than its limited sampler.

An archive containing folders such as Aircraft, Scenery or Community is not a standalone flight simulator. In particular, an MSFS Community package still requires the matching full Microsoft simulator; it cannot turn into a Flight Simulator 2020 demo by itself.
