Which flight sims have a free PC demo, and how do I get one?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Compare free PC flight simulator demos for X-Plane and FSX, then follow safe download steps and fixes for common installation problems.

For general PC flight simulation, the main free demos are the X-Plane desktop demo and the legacy Microsoft Flight Simulator X demo. FlightGear is fully free rather than a demo, while DCS World supplies a free base simulator. Check the Windows requirements, then download and run or extract the installer from a trusted library.

Which free PC flight simulator demo should you choose?

Choose X-Plane for a modern civil-flight evaluation, FSX for a legacy sampler, FlightGear for unrestricted freeware flying, or DCS World for combat simulation.

SimulatorDownload typeBest reason to choose itMain limitation
X-Plane desktop demo and compatibility detailsTrue evaluation demoTesting flight dynamics, graphics performance and controllers before buying the corresponding full releaseThe operating area and evaluation time or control access are restricted. Confirm the version shown on the download page.
Legacy FSX demo package and included contentTrue legacy demoSampling the original FSX engine, aircraft and missions on WindowsIt is an old, unsupported product and may require legacy components. It does not represent Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 or 2024.
Complete FlightGear installers for desktop systemsFull freeware simulatorCivil flight simulation without a time limit or subsequent simulator purchaseIt is not a cut-down commercial demo; installation and content management differ from X-Plane and Microsoft Flight Simulator.
Free DCS World base package for PCFree-to-play base simulatorLearning combat aircraft systems with included aircraft and terrainAdditional aircraft, terrains and campaigns are separate modules; the free package is not a preview of every module.

A demo is the better choice when you need to test frame rates, joystick detection or the basic flight model before purchasing. If the priority is flying without any expiry or payment, FlightGear or the free DCS World package makes more sense than repeatedly reinstalling a restricted demo.

How do you download a free flight simulator demo?

Download the simulator installer itself, not an aircraft or scenery add-on that requires a separate simulator.

  1. Choose the correct package. Use X-Plane for a present-day civil evaluation or FSX only when you specifically want the older FSX experience. FlightGear and DCS World are complete free base installations rather than timed demos.
  2. Check the platform and release. Read the download description for the supported operating system, architecture and simulator version. An installer made for another operating system will not run merely because it is stored on a PC.
  3. Allow enough storage. A small initial installer may download a much larger collection of simulator files. Keep additional free space for temporary installation data and future updates.
  4. Save and inspect the file. Download it to a local folder, let the transfer finish and scan it with Windows security software. A partial .exe or damaged .zip commonly produces unexplained setup errors.
  5. Run or extract it correctly. Launch an installer directly, but extract an archive completely before opening anything inside it. Running setup from within a compressed archive can prevent supporting files from being found.
  6. Complete the first launch. Let any content download or file validation finish, then configure the graphics and controller axes. Begin with moderate graphics settings so an overloaded GPU is not mistaken for a broken installation.

Do Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 or 2024 have a free PC demo?

No, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 do not have conventional free downloadable PC demo installers. The free Microsoft download commonly found in archives is the much older Flight Simulator X demo.

FSX uses a different engine, aircraft system and scenery platform, so it cannot predict how MSFS 2020 or 2024 will look or perform on the same computer. Subscription access, where available, is also not a free demo and may require an active paid plan.

Why will a flight simulator demo not install or start?

Most failed demo installations come from an incomplete download, an old Windows dependency, security blocking or confusion between a simulator and an add-on.

  • Windows blocks the FSX demo: verify that the file came from the linked archive and scan it before permitting it. Old installers can trigger warnings because their signing and packaging pre-date modern Windows security practices.
  • A legacy component is missing: FSX may depend on older DirectX components that are not enabled by a standard Windows installation. Use Microsoft’s signed legacy runtime package; never download an individual missing DLL from an unknown source.
  • The archive reports errors: delete the damaged copy, confirm that sufficient storage is available and download it again to a local drive rather than a synchronised or network folder.
  • X-Plane controls stop after flying for a while: if input works at first and stops after a consistent evaluation period, that is probably the demo restriction rather than a failed joystick. If the controller never works, test it in Windows and bind its axes inside the simulator.
  • The simulator opens to a black screen or closes: update the graphics driver, disable unnecessary overlays and retry with lower graphics settings. Very old FSX code may also need Windows compatibility handling, but use that only after a normal launch fails.

Can you install aircraft and scenery in a demo?

Do not assume add-ons made for the full simulator will work in its demo. Installers may look for a full-version registry entry or folder structure, while aircraft and scenery can depend on files omitted from the evaluation package.

An aircraft archive is not a standalone flight simulator: folders such as Aircraft, Scenery or Community need the matching host simulator and release. X-Plane add-ons may also require a particular major version, and scenery outside the demo’s permitted region provides little practical value until the full simulator is installed.
