Fix a missing FS2004 aircraft preview by checking model and texture paths, add-on compatibility, folder layout, graphics settings and FS9.cfg.
In FS2004, a missing aircraft preview usually means FS9 can read the aircraft’s menu entry but cannot render its visual model or textures. If one add-on is affected, check its folder layout and aircraft.cfg references. If every aircraft is blank, reset FS9’s display configuration and investigate the graphics driver.
Is one aircraft affected or are all previews blank?
Testing a default FS2004 aircraft separates an add-on problem from a simulator-wide display fault.

How do I fix a blank preview for one add-on?
A single blank preview almost always points to the add-on’s model, texture or installation structure rather than FS2004 itself.
- Check the aircraft folder. The aircraft’s main folder should sit directly inside FS2004’s
Aircraftdirectory. Itsaircraft.cfg,.airfile and the relevantmodelandtexturefolders must not be buried inside an extra folder. Compare the package with our FS2004 add-on folder-layout instructions. - Confirm that the package is made for FS2004. An FSX-native or newer model cannot simply be placed in FS9. Some older FS2002 aircraft work, but compatibility is not guaranteed. Use a version specifically labelled for FS2004 or FS9 where possible.
- Inspect the selected repaint’s configuration entry. In its
[fltsim.x]section,model=vctells FS9 to use a folder namedmodel.vc; an emptymodel=entry points to the plainmodelfolder. Likewise,texture=bluepoints totexture.blue. Correct spelling and remove unintended spaces. - Open the relevant model folder. It should contain a
model.cfgfile and the referenced exterior.mdlfile. Insidemodel.cfg, thenormal=value must match an existing model filename. Do not rename a model at random; the safer fix is to restore the package’s original files. - Check whether it is only a repaint. Many downloads contain textures and a configuration entry but no model. They must be installed into the specified base aircraft. - Reinstall a clean copy. Remove only the affected add-on folder, preserve any personal edits elsewhere, and install a fresh copy according to its included documentation. Mixing files from different releases is a common cause of model and texture mismatches.
Does FS2004 need a thumbnail.jpg file?
No. FS2004 normally renders the selected aircraft directly from its visual model; it does not use the FSX-style thumbnail.jpg system. Adding a thumbnail image will therefore not repair a blank FS9 preview.
How do I restore every missing aircraft preview?
If default aircraft also have blank previews, treat the problem as a graphics or FS9 configuration fault.
- Switch display mode. Press
Alt+Enterto move between full-screen and windowed mode, then reopen the aircraft selection screen. A preview that returns after this switch points to a display-device reset problem. - Regenerate FS9.CFG. Close FS2004, open
%APPDATA%\Microsoft\FS9, back upFS9.CFG, and rename the original. FS2004 creates a fresh configuration file when it next starts. This resets display settings and other preferences, so keep the backup until everything is working. - Test before restoring tweaks. Select the correct display adaptor and resolution, then test a default aircraft without forced anti-aliasing, compatibility wrappers or graphics-control-panel overrides.
- Check the graphics installation. Repair or reinstall the display driver if the preview remains blank, particularly if menus flicker, the simulator loses its 3D device or external aircraft views are also corrupt.
- Repair FS2004 only as a last step. If a fresh configuration and working graphics driver do not restore default previews, back up add-ons and personal files before repairing or reinstalling the simulator’s original files.
What if the aircraft is missing from the list as well?
An aircraft that does not appear in the selection list has a different problem: FS9 is not recognising a usable aircraft entry at all. Check for an extra nested folder, missing base model, broken [fltsim.x] numbering and absent menu fields using our aircraft selection-list troubleshooting guide.
Can I fly an aircraft when its preview is blank?
You can use it if the flight loads and the complete exterior model appears correctly in an external view. In that case the fault may be confined to FS9’s preview renderer. Do not ignore a blank preview when the aircraft is also invisible, textureless or produces an initialisation error; those symptoms indicate an incomplete or incompatible installation.
