You cannot legitimately activate or reinstall FS2004 with a generic replacement for a lost product key. FS2004's boxed edition does not use the later FSX-style online activation system: the key is checked during setup, while Disc 4 is normally checked when the simulator starts. Recover the original key or use another licensed copy.
Does FS2004 use online activation?
No. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004: A Century of Flight, also known as FS9, predates the online activation system used by FSX. There is no activation website, telephone process or Microsoft account record from which you can retrieve its installation key.

How can I recover a lost FS2004 product key?
Start with the original licensing material, because FS2004 keys cannot be reset or regenerated through an online account.
- Check the complete retail package. Look on the product-key label, CD case, manual sleeve and any inserts kept with the four discs. The installation code is normally a 25-character key divided into five groups.
- Search your own records. Check photographs, scanned documents, archived purchase correspondence and any notes made when FS2004 was installed. If another person bought the copy, ask whether they retained the packaging.
- Preserve a working installation. If FS2004 remains installed, do not uninstall it or erase the old Windows drive. Make a full system or drive image before attempting recovery.
- Ask the original supplier. Proof of purchase may help, although replacement keys or media for software of this age may no longer be available.
- Use another legitimate copy if recovery fails. A complete licensed FS2004 retail package with its own key and discs is the practical reinstall route when the original key is permanently lost.
Can the key be recovered from an installed copy?
Possibly, but FS2004 does not normally display the original installation key in plain text. The Product ID shown by the simulator or stored in Windows is not necessarily the 25-character product key and cannot be converted by simply rearranging its numbers.
Some reputable offline product-key recovery utilities can read encoded licensing data left by certain installations, but FS2004 support varies. Use such a tool only on your own computer, keep it offline where practical and scan it before running it. Commands that reveal a Windows firmware key retrieve the Windows key, not the FS2004 key.
If the old drive no longer starts, connecting it as a secondary drive or restoring a complete system image may preserve the licensing data. Merely copying the FS2004 programme folder usually does not recreate the registry information required by a clean installation.
What if FS2004 accepts the key but asks for Disc 4?
A Disc 4 error is a media-authentication or compatibility problem, not a lost-key problem. Confirm that you are using the correct original disc, clean it carefully and try a working optical drive before changing the installation.
Modern Windows versions can reject the legacy disc-check technology used by old games even when the key and media are genuine. Avoid modified executables, shared keys and downloads claiming to bypass the check; they can introduce malware, violate the licence or leave FS9 incompatible with patches and add-ons.
What should I do after recovering the key?
Record the key in two secure places, install the base simulator and confirm that an unmodified flight loads before restoring add-ons. Then follow the correct official FS9.1 update sequence; applying the patch before adding aircraft and scenery makes later faults much easier to isolate.
Keep the key, all four discs, the official update, add-on licence files and installers together. A backup of the finished FS2004 folder is useful, but it does not replace the original product key for a future clean installation.
